Use energy-efficient appliances: when purchasing an energy-efficient appliance, you should look for appliances with the energy star label, which is a federal guarantee that the appliance will consume less energy during use and when on standby than standard models. Energy savings differ based on the specific appliance.

Replace your air filters: Many devices across your home use filters, including your HVAC system. These systems often come with displayed reminders to replace filters regularly.

Use natural light: Lighting accounts for a significant amount of energy costs and using light from the sun is an intuitive way to reduce your energy consumption.
Planting trees: A well-placed tree can help raise your property value. They can also lower your heating and cooling costs.

Buy an efficient amount in order not to waste: Wasted food adds up to wasted energy and wasted water.

Try a meatless day: It takes more water and fossil fuel energy to produce meat than vegetables and grains, so skip meat for just one day a week to shrink your water and energy footprint.

Support sustainable farms: When possible, buy food from sustainable farms that minimize the use of hazardous pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This reduces energy inputs and protects waterways from being polluted by runoff.

Tip #1: Set a goal for cutting food waste. Several of these steps have to do with using psychology to help you reduce food waste. It’s important to start by making a mindset shift and setting a clear goal that you can stick to.

Tip #2: Purchase less food. The best way to prevent food waste is to purchase only what you need.

Tip #3: Use the food you have. Once the food is in your house, make it a priority to use it

Tip #4: Make your food last. If you’re eating a diverse diet and trying complicated dishes, you may not be able to use every single thing you buy at the grocery store in a given week, and that’s fine. Or if you live far from a grocery store or simply don’t have time to shop every week, you don’t need to settle for eating packaged, highly processed food. You just need to know how to make your food last a little longer to avoid waste.

Tip #5: Share your food. If you have food that’s nearing the end of its edible life, invite a friend over for dinner, or throw all of your leftover veggies into one big stew and share it with your neighbor.
