For an animal to be held this way, it must have a calm temperament and be somewhat used to handling in general, otherwise it may struggle and try to escape. It it also helpful for younger animals as it can simulate their mother holding them.

Holding an animal in this way is useful for when you need to restrain its legs/arms or comfort it. Disadvantages include: it’s hard to get some animals to relax enough to be wrapped up like this, it’s impossible to analyse the animals body except its head and neck.

Can be used for show horses.
Although they are designed to catch, hold and tie, some people ride horses using a halter rather than a bridle. This is not safe as they fit loosely and does not provide enough stability and leverage to the rider.
Advantages of halters are that they don’t weigh a lot so can be carried around, they put no pressure on the animals head, and they are more flexible in size than bridles so can be moved from anima to animal.
