Wanted: To protect the public from pollution in our ocean and waterways and wanted to make North Carolina’s shellfish sanitation program one of the best in the country.

But: She faced challenges of pollution to shellfish waters from stormwater runoff and it was affecting human health which resulted in closures of shellfish beds which in turn hurt the coastal economy. 

So: She worked with law makers and the N.C. Coastal Federation and fought business interests and government bureaucracy and collected large amounts of data about the pollution problem and in 1989 the first stormwater rules were developed. Her efforts and lifelong devotion to keep our coastal waters clean and safe earned her the 2015 Pelican Award.

c)      Students will research and learn about storm water runoff and how it causes pollution. They will use a map to find rivers/stream that run through our community and use the map to find where they empty into the ocean. They will post "This Drains to the New River" sign. They will also design and create signs to post around the community to remind the local residents to clean up motor oil from cars, yard clippings, pet waste, litter, and lawn chemicals including fertilizer that can be washed into storm drains and end up in our rivers and oceans.
