Students in my class know and care about our environment. Living close to the beach and especially the recent hurricane has brought to light many issues about pollution to our rivers and oceans. I believe this is an issue that is a big significance to our local community because the state of our rivers and oceans effect not only the sea life but also the people who live at and visit our beaches. I think in my Unit Planner it would be easy for me to insert a project about solutions for water pollution. The following clarifying objective could help guide me in the creation of this project. We could identify where and how our waters are being polluted and look for ways to help eliminate or reduce the pollution.
Clarifying Objective 1.G.1.1 Use geographic tools to identify characteristics of various landforms and bodies of water

Who: Patti Fowler

Wanted: To protect the public from pollution in our ocean and waterways and wanted to make North Carolina’s shellfish sanitation program one of the best in the country.

But: She faced challenges of pollution to shellfish waters from stormwater runoff and it was affecting human health which resulted in closures of shellfish beds which in turn hurt the coastal economy.

So: She worked with law makers and the N.C. Coastal Federation and fought business interests and government bureaucracy and collected large amounts of data about the pollution problem and in 1989 the first stormwater rules were developed. Her efforts and lifelong devotion to keep our coastal waters clean and safe earned her the 2015 Pelican Award.

They will use a map to find rivers/stream that run through our community and use the map to find where they empty into the ocean. They will post "This Drains to the New River" sign. They will also design and create signs to post around the community to remind the local residents to clean up motor oil from cars, yard clippings, pet waste, litter, and lawn chemicals including fertilizer that can be washed into storm drains and end up in our rivers and oceans.
