When I read this passage, I felt sad because his mom may have had no choise and didn't want to give him away. It tells me that he is upset about being adopted and wishes his mom never "gave him away". Also it shows that he feels sort of unwanted even though he knows inside that Penni loves him. I think he knows many things yet doesn't want to believe them.  The words " I only have one mom and she gave me away" Is what made me think that all because it seams so sad and makes it seam that he has a really hard life.
