The Royal Economics Society is once again running their annual Young Economist of the Year competition which is a chance for students in Years 10 – 13 to consider real-world economic problems and how they would solve them. 

Entries into the competition can be individual or in small groups of up to 5 participants. Students don’t need to have studied Economics before, and for students thinking of studying Economics in the future at university, this is a great opportunity as a super-curricular activity for their development and to develop their interest in the subject. 

Submissions can include writing a blog, delivering a presentation, a podcast or a video on one of Discover Economics five contemporary economic issues. 

Once submissions are received, five finalists will be selected, who will then have the exciting opportunity to present their ideas and research in front of a panel of economic experts.

The programme will provide students with the opportunity to gain industry related qualifications, whilst also working on their communication style, interview technique, employability skills and building a CV.  As well as taking part in hands on activities to gain new skills or enhance the skills and knowledge that they already have.

Following the course, students will gain access to employers, with the potential to gain full or part time employment and apprentice opportunities and we are working with our partners and industry leaders to offer these opportunities.

Whether students are looking to secure a summer job, gain work experience, or attend opportunities in their field of interest, this session will provide practical, actionable guidance.

We are aware that a wide range of students find Maths and the study of STEM subjects involving Maths challenging and that this can deter them from considering future pathways in STEM subjects within careers that they might be really keen to pursue but are in the mindset of thinking would be out of their reach.  Thus this offer caters to support A Level Mathematic students.

With this in mind, I wanted to reach out and let you know about the Levelling Up Scheme we will be running this summer. This will be delivered in association with the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and is a programme to support A-Level students with their Maths skills, to help them to be successful in achieving their A Level Maths qualification and to provide them with the knowledge, tools, and encouragement to consider applying for mathematics or other STEM degrees in their future studies. 

The programme would be delivered as online tutoring sessions, delivered to your students by our trained student ambassadors, who all hold a Maths Level 3 or equivalent qualification and are currently studying a Maths or similar subject at undergraduate level here at the university. This programme is completely free of charge to the students and school. 

There will be 8 sessions, each lasting one hour which will be delivered this summer term, between 13/14 May and 8/9 July 2026.

Next Steps – Nominating Students 

We are keen to offer this support to your Year 12/Year 1 students but have a limited number of spaces available for this pilot programme, and students would need to meet eligibility criteria to be granted a place on this programme. If you do have any students who you would like to nominate to take part in the Levelling Up programme with us, you can find the application/nomination form attached to this email. Please do complete the attached application/nomination form for each student and email this in password protected format, back over to us to outreach@gre.ac.uk 23:59 Monday 11^th May, so that we can consider all nominations fairly and confirm those who have been shortlisted asap for the tutoring sessions to then be able to commence in May.

How can I help students get into medical school?

If you have students who want to study medicine or dentistry, they may need to sit the two-hour UCAT exam as part of their application. As registration for the 2026 UCAT opens this Wednesday, Unifrog are here to help your students enter the exam with confidence!
