Responses to COVID-19 Pandemic by Rosa Gissel Valdivia Reyes

Having lived almost two years into a pandemic, we see how a virus can affect so many aspects of life. We've also realized the importance of the government responses and their management and preventative decisions. This concept map will illustrate the responses that many countries took after the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic. I explain the different measures taken and how they were important in trying to mitigate the spread of Covid. #gbh_conceptmap2.

Disease outbreaks happen often but the majority are controlled before they reach international waters. These outbreaks are usually seen as epidemics since it's the outbreak of a disease in one geographical region. On the other hand, a pandemic is the outbreak of a disease over multiple geographical regions, reaching global masses. This was the case with COVID-19. Once COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in early March, countries began to respond to it by implementing preventive measures, more health facilities, research, and other measures to try and mitigate the spread of this challenging virus.

Improvised Medical Stations in NYC

At the beginning of the pandemic, New York was one of the states with most cases. Their medical infrastructure wasn't capable of helping all the infected patients so the US military collaborated with the Department of Health and Human Services and the state of New York and constructed 1,000-bed temporary medical stations. This was set in March 26, 2020, two weeks after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic. This was a fast response by the US government, they understood that New York needed an increase of healthcare capabilities to care for all their citizens and hopefully treat and control the spread of the virus.

By the time COVID-19 was established as a pandemic the US had thousands of cases. Hospitals emergency rooms were impacted so to reduce the pressure on emergency rooms the government began setting up drive-through testing sites. The goal was to improve surveillance of cases and prevent the spread of covid in healthcare facilities. Staff wore proper PPE, tested people, and advised them to quarantine until their results came back negative. This response by the US government was helpful in mitigating the spread and contact between non-infected and infected individuals.

Two weeks after COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, WorldVision highlighted the importance of countries working together to reduce the spread of covid and the effects it could have on the vulnerable populations. This response was aimed at vulnerable populations in 17 countries. They urged countries to fund their response strategies so that preventative measures, health systems, economic, and social support could strengthen.

By March 2020, the US led the world in COVID-19 cases. Although the government began to implement response plans, the plans weren't successful due to deficient political commitment. The articles argues that the US had unclear goals on tackling the pandemic and that political and economic interests were the priority rather than public health. The response measures led grave consequences.

From March to May, South Korea was the country with the second highest rate of COVID-19 cases. However, their early recognition of the threat along with their aggressive prevention measures, mobilization of clinical care resources, and most importantly strong national leadership allowed them to dramatically lower their COVID-19 incidence and mortality rate. South Koreas responses to COVID-19 should be adopted by other countries and the global community so we could surpass this and future challenging pandemics.
