663 million people worldwide still do not have access to improved drinking water.
At least 10 percent of the world's population is thought to consume food irrigated by waste water.
By 2025 water scarcity is expected to affect more than 1.8 billion people—hurting agricultural workers and poor farmers the most.
Water consumption includes basic hydration, hygiene, crop production, and livestock rearing. These functions are not optional, but necessary in a prosperous society. Food security, educational opportunity, and personal health are just a few of the connected points that depend upon a community's, an adult's, and a child's access to clean water

According to an old legend, a Macedonian girl named Dojrana was fetching water from special springs that had to be sealed after use. At the very moment Dojrana was filling her jugs, she heard that her beloved had come back from the army and forgot to seal the springs. Lake Dojran was, as the legend says, the result of her careless euphoria. Due to the Mediterranean climate of southern Macedonia and the proximity of the balmy Aegean not far to the south, in the Dojran area vegetation starts blooming n early spring and continues to do so until late autumn. Even though Lake Dojran is only 10 meters (30 feet) deep at its deepest point, it is full of life. The large quantity of weeds that grow in the lake and the large number of plankton on its surface make Dojran’s waters very helpful for treating rheumatism, skin diseases and respiratory diseases, so many tourists come here precisely for this. What are distinguishable about the Dojran lakeside are the fishing boats and the fishermen’s huts standing on stilts above the surface of the water. The method of fishing here is original and very old, performed with the help of the cormorants, gulls and other birds that fly above the lake, directing the fish into the baskets where they are gathered in enormous quantities. The father of history himself, Herodotus, noted Dojran’s fish potential way back in the 5th century B.C. According to him, the lake was so teeming with fish that if you put an empty basket in the water at night, it would be full by morning. Today, the best known types of fish are red-finned carp, trout, perch, eel and claw-fish.

Matka - A gorge in which a rich complex of mediaeval building survives, including churches, monasteries and remnants of a fortress (the mediaeval town of Matka). There are dozens of caves and large number of endemic plants and animals. The Canyon covers an area of around 5.000ha and is located 15km south-west of Skopje. By its morphogenetic characteristic, it is a breakthrough gorge. Krastic form deserve particular attention here-ten caves with their length ranging between 20 and 176 meters and two vertical chasms with a depth up to 35 meters. Matka was one of the largest refugee centers during the glacial period resulting in the presence of high number of relic and endemic plants, 20% are endemic or relic spices. Among Tertary relics, the most significant are the kosani violet and natay's Ramonda (Ramonda natalie). It is also important to mention that there are 77 species of Balkan endemic small butterflies in area of Matka Canyon, while 18 other species are new to the science.

The Treska canyon is vertically cut into the massive of Suva Mountain. The different formations in the canyon like the karrens, flutes, valleys, cracks, crevices and caves have been formed by a long term impact of the mountain rivers, as well as by great temperature oscillations. In the surroundings of the Treska Canyon one can find dozens of caves, the most beautiful ones being Vrelo, Krshtalna and Ubava. The caves are filled with numerous stalagmites, stalactites and dripstone pillars and some of them are illuminated. The diversity of dripstone adornments has been captured by a well deployed illumination. Visiting tours are organized by an official guide. The Treska Canyon is the most important alpine climbing center in northern Macedonia. The major climbing season in Matka begins in spring, round the Easter holidays when visitors come from countries from all over Europe. The season continues throughout summer and fall until the end of November.

Being the largest and most beautiful out of Macedonia’s three tectonic lakes, Lake Ohrid is about 30 kilometers (18 miles) long and round 288 meters (945 feet) deep. Its astonishingly clean and clear waters, together with the serene stillness of its mountain settings have captivated visitors since prehistoric times. While the lake is filled up by water from three rivers, most of Ohrid’s water comes from another lake - Prespa which is located on the other side of Mountain Galicica. Due to the high elevation, Prespa spills its water down to Ohrid through mountain springs, the most important ones being Ostrovo and Biljana, located near the monastery of St. Naum and Ohrid town, respectively. With its unique flora and fauna characteristic of the tertiary period (2-4 million years ago), Ohrid is one of Europe’s great biological reserves. Most of the lake’s plant and animal species are endemic and unique to Ohrid. The most famous among these are two types of the Ohrid trout, named letnica and belvica. Other unique Ohrid creatures include two types of eel, and the bleak whose scales are used for making the well-known Ohrid pearl. This treasured jewel is produced according to a secret method which was passed on from generation to generation. Sport fishing attracts many passionate fishermen from Macedonia, Europe and even from the world.
