This is because realistically, very little calculations in the real world will have constant speed. Objects are always accelerating and deaccelerating, and that's what Newton Physics are all about. Speed is really only useful when you are measuring something theoretical, and velocity is pretty much only used in the military. Not only is it very necessary to know average speed in real life, but it is easy to calculate. While velocity requires a known direction and acceleration takes multiple steps, speed is quick and convenient. It's also the basis of velocity and acceleration.
