Great lesson with our 3rd Graders today who have never seen a microbit. My co-worker Amy H. and I led the lesson together for another 3rd grader teacher. Here is a lesson plan layout: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BQAjO3zivZY29B2DlMrVIRa51zwEN4y7gmwcRBGoF4I/edit?usp=sharing

Intro to Microbits using a compass for Geography 3rd Grade

The first chapter in our Social Studies is Geography. The end goal was create a treasure map, but at the rate we were moving, we just moved in different directions throughout our campus and noted the direction we were moving. We identified key points on campus, and in the background to help internalize cardinal direction.

My students range from grades 3-5 in a Special Day Class (SDC) providing academic and behavioral services in a moderate to severe setting.

We explored our Micro:bits for the first time in our weekly STEAM Lab block. Students were excited to produce their first names and add a symbol of their choice to follow it while learning to type on a keyboard. Smiling faces emerged as they read their unique name badge as it moved across the LED lights.

As we explored MakeCode, students wanted to try the Love Meter next which is a concept I was none too familiar with yet they knew well. Students added a math code ranging from numbers 0 to 100 to be randomly selected. Students took individual and partnered turns while holding hands to touch the designated pins located at the bottom of the Micro:bit where the edge connector for accessories can be found. Students were tasked with identifying the randomized number that appeared across the LED lights and then designate it as odd or even. Students were also required to identify numbers in the ones and tens place value. Essential questions were asked such as how did the number change when hands were held or do you think the outcome of the random number is accurate in gauging how much you are really loved?

The level of student engagement and willingness to interact with the lessons is made seamless by the heavy hands-on component needed to manipulate a small pocket-sized computer. As a result, the countless activities feel less like school work but rather unassuming lessons which creates fun and a totally interactive learning element.

Students were supported throughout the lessons from assembly of the Micro:bits to the click and drag motion to build the code on the laptop.
