         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Media Literacy<br></strong>Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media.<br><br></div><div><strong>Rationale<br></strong>The world is becoming more and more digitally involved. It’s important for students to be able to recognize false media reports, and infotainment. In a time where social media is so prevalent, it’s important to teach our students online safety and the importance of keeping a safe online persona.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>Learning outcomes<br></strong>Students will be able to:</div><ul><li>Understand how media messages shape our culture and society</li><li>Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do</li><li>Recognize bias, spin, misinformation and lies</li><li>Create and distribute their own media messages&nbsp;<br><br></li></ul><div><strong>Trends</strong></div><ul><li>Fake news, social media etiquette, knowing the different social media outlets and how they’re used and develop an understanding of the different social sites’ demographics</li><li>Engaging, empowering, and driving civic participation- Being informed and informing through digital literacy</li><li>Creating media that matters-bringing light to social issues such as poverty, human rights<br><br></li></ul><div><br></div><div><strong>Guiding Principles</strong></div><ul><li>We will guide students to put out responsible, thoughtful, and important information into the digital world.&nbsp;</li><li>We will guide students to recognize media bias and strive to create unbiased media output</li><li>We will be open-minded to all forms of literacy and will strive to incorporate digital media in our classrooms frequently.</li><li>Digital literacy will be incorporated in at least one activity a week.<br><br></li></ul><div><strong>Learning Outline</strong></div><ul><li>Media bias- Have students analyze fake political propaganda and recognize traits that make it inaccurate&nbsp;</li><li>The power of social media in political matters- Advocating for public policy on social media platforms and how that is successful/unsuccessful</li><li>Analyze and discuss a political meme and it’s relevance</li><li>Analyze and discuss advertising and it’s underlying marketing strategies</li><li>Cyber bullying &amp; a safe online persona-From personal safety measures, to online etiquette on social media (how not to be an online jerk!)</li><li>How to read and analyze a news story on multimedia platforms. (How to identify the part of the story that’s not being told, media bias, factual information)</li><li>How the format and design of newspapers and online newspapers affect the way information is received.&nbsp;</li><li>Audience-Creating your own media story&nbsp;<br><br></li></ul><div><strong>Culminating Product</strong></div><ul><li>A newspaper project in which each week students create an “issue” of a school newspaper that highlights not only current events but the issue tackled in the lessons that week. Students can create this on multimedia platforms including, a newspaper in print, an online newspaper, news report video, a music video, or other outlets.<br><br></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Definition</strong>:&nbsp; Media Literacy is understanding the components and uses of media, as well as having the skills to access, analyze, evaluate and produce a variety of media.&nbsp; Specifically media literacy includes digital literacy, information (non-fiction) literacy, news literacy, marketing literacy, visual literacy. &nbsp;</div><div><br><br></div><div><strong>Rational: </strong>&nbsp;Media Literacy is important in the context of teaching and learning at our school because:</div><div>1) it prepares students to function as 21st century citizens,</div><div>2) it builds foundations and skills for finding information through technology,</div><div>3) it prepares students to communicate globally through digital means&nbsp;</div><div>4) it meets common core and ccrpi standards.&nbsp;</div><div>5) it builds critical thinkers<br><br><strong>learning outcomes</strong>&nbsp;</div><ul><li><ul><li>I can recognize different types of media</li><li>I can use online search engines to------</li><li>I can analyze a variety of media and distinguish between credible and fraudulent sources (sources with explicit and implicit bias)</li><li>I can create a variety of media products (to use across the curriculum) to communicate my thinking</li><li>I can describe careers that use knowledge and skills of media literacy.</li></ul></li></ul><div><strong>Trends in Media Literacy</strong></div><ol><li>The prevalence of fake digital news, images, marketing, and fundraising claims has increased&nbsp;</li><li>Social media <em>use</em> has increased.&nbsp; What affects does it have on students future (college admissions, job applications, dating)</li><li>Branding</li><li>Virtual, asynchronous communication and learning (—) how to view, use, and extract knowledge from such digital learning opportunities</li><li>Global communication (blogging, digital commentary)</li><li>Building safe online persona (avatar); Cyber bullying &amp; a safe online persona-From personal safety measures, to online etiquette on social media (how not to be an online jerk!)</li></ol><div><strong>Guiding principles</strong></div><ol><li>1:1 technology access in class</li><li>Ongoing teacher professional development to stay up to date on digital practices and applications (including google classroom)</li><li>Post all daily warm ups and assignments in Google Classroom for students</li><li>Once per week students access, discuss, and reflect on a minimum of one current event online</li><li>Use avatars in class&nbsp;</li><li>A minimum of once per week students write a blog response/reflection&nbsp;</li><li>All students to keep a digital portfolio as an authentic, professional assessment of their work in class (i.e. website, binder, flip book, etc.)</li></ol><div>Culminating Project: Students will create and distribute their own media message. The media message should be based on the negative ways the media can inform students' decisions pertaining to health, bullying and aggression, substance abuse, etc. Students will use skills learned throughout the course to create this project.</div>]]></description>
