Character I’m choosing for my project is Cory Maxson. Cory is Troy and Rose's 17 year old son in the play Fences. Cory loves playing football and has big dreams in life. However Troy, his father, holds Cory back from his dreams out of fear that Cory will get hurt. But Cory is hurt that his father has stopped him from achieving his dreams.

Cory is respectful

Troy asks Cory in an annoyed tone “Yeah, what?”, Cory responds “Yes sir.”

Cory is very respectful to his parents and all adults he knows. For example Cory always greats and hugs his mom any time he sees her. Cory never talked back to his dad really until after he found out his Dad cheated on his mom. Most teens aren’t as respectful as Cory.

Cory has self respect

“I ain’t going nowhere! Come on put me out! I ain’t scared of you anymore.”

Cory his whole life was terrified of his dad and always did whatever his father told him. Even if it meant his father yelling at him, Cory having to give up his dreams, or being told by his own father that he doesn't love him. Cory let his father disrespect him his whole life, but Cory knows he doesn’t have to let his father treat him terribly anymore. Cory has gained respect for himself.

Yes I sympathize with Cory because I know how Cory feels about wanting to be himself. It's hard when people push you to be someone or something you are not. Cory wants to be Cory and no one else.
Do I agree with all Cory decisions throughout the play, no, but I understand why he did them. For instance I don’t agree with Cory being disrespectful to his father on the porch step, but I understand why Cory didn't respect him. Cory didn't respect his father because his dad never respected Cory for who he was throughout his whole life. Cory isn’t going to respect someone who doesn't respect him.

This art relates to Cory because Cory doesn’t want to be his father. Cory doesn’t want to be anyone but himself, in the beginning of the play he was being who his father wanted him to be whether he liked it or not. But at the end of the play Cory finally lets go of his father's expectations and goes out into the world, in order to be himself.

Theme Cory doesn’t want to grow up to be like his dad or grow up to be another Troy.

He wants to grow up to be his own person not his parents.

“I don't want to be Troy Maxson. I want to be me.” Pg 137 Fences

Cory doesn’t want to be his father. Cory doesn’t want to do the same things his dad does or do the things his dad wants him too. Cory wants to be Cory. Like he stated in the quote below Cory wants to be himself not his dad. The quote on pg 137 supports the theme of Cory not wanting to grow up to be his dad.

I’m me and that's who I want to be.
How this motto matches Cory is because his dad has been pushing his son to be just like him. Well Cory doesn’t want to be his dad, he just wants to be himself.
