ACDA: What mental habits/skills did you apply during any of the conference activities and how did they work for you? Alternatively, did you learn any new mental skills or habits, and what were they?

I really utilized positive self talk during my time at ACDA. I was in a piece that was in the adjudicated concerts so it was easy to get in my head and compare myself to other dancers. I just had to remind myself why I was there and why I love dance so much. It was really helpful for me.

ACDA: What was something you discovered or encountered during the conference that has made you aware of a horizon goal you want to work toward?

This conference really allowed me to see all of the possibilities and opportunities there are in the dance world. Something that I have been working towards this year is really broadening my dance horizons and getting comfortable with so many different areas of dance. This conference really allowed me to do that.

I utilized this technique while in dance class and it gave me a complete different mindset. For whatever reason, when talking about myself in third person it feels a lot more intense and harsh. It allowed me to reassess how I talk to myself and force myself to be nicer to myself.

I think it really depends on the situation and which self talk I need. Sometimes a little negativity can motivate me, but most of the times it is not beneficial and just makes me feel down. A lot of times I just need no self talk, and to just go for it.

When my helpless child comes out I think that the faithful friend is a really important inner dialogue that can help me get out of that rut. The faithful friend can give me the strength and optimism to keep going even when I feel helpless. I also think that the calm optimist could be a really helpful tool to help me chill out and find peace.
