New York is an extremely overwhelming city to live in. This is evident in how the city is described as a place where "forests of skyscrapers / Compete with one another in height". The choice of the word 'forests' suggests that skyscrapers are densely packed together in a small area. This shows no signs of stopping as these skyscrapers are constantly '[competing] with one another' to be the tallest. These reflect the culture of competition in the city, and the constant desire to be on top of another makes it an overwhelming city to live in.

Although the skyscrapers above give NYC a bit of glory, it will not hide how destroyed, unhygienic and dirty their subway stations are. The choices of words are because the subway station looks very mistreated and very under maintained despite how up above, it gives off a rich glory atmosphere because of the skyscrapers. Therefore, this highlights how New York is very easily deceiving then how it looks.

New York is an unhygienic and dirty place as it has a dirty subway train for the locals and tourists to travel in. This is evident in,"dirty were the window panes." This shows that New York does not maintain its subway train windows and this makes it very unhygienic and unpleasant for people travelling by the New York subway. Therefore, New York is a dirty place which does not maintain its subway trains well. - Saharsh

My impression of New York is it is a very unhygienic and dirty to live in. This is evident in the poem," Dirty were the window-panes, spoiled with many rain-marks, its matted seats were worn and torn and disembowelled. This shows that NY is unbothered of the cleanliness in their own area, as the window-panes have been rusted badly and the seats have been used too much that it was diembowelled.

i think New York city is a very confusing and intimidating place to live in. This is evident in how the city is described as a place where 'forests of skyscrapers / compete with one another for height suggests that a lot of building are cramped together in one small space. This is a continuous thing as ' competing with one another for height' suggests that the buildings want to be the tallest. it is confusing as when the people enter the subway station they are greeted with a lot of unhygienic things. this is evident in 'dirty were window panes' this shows how dirty the subway station can get and no one bothers to clean them. this shows the irony, as NYC on top is very clean but in the subway station it is very dirty and unhygienic

New York is more than meets the eye - a city with vast contrasts. This is evident in "The window panes of the car I got into were encrusted with much rust" and "Its matted seats were worn and torn and disemboweled". These two quotes describe the conditions of the subway as to being miserable and neglected. In contrast, the quote "I stole a glance at the magazine a girl was reading and found that she was poring over the recent fashions in Paris" suggests that the rich and the poor live in different realities. While the poor are forced to cope with the deferred maintenance in public transport, the wealthy are living lavish lives in a world of luxury and decadence. Despite this, the ordinary people can only read about their lives, hoping that one day that could be their reality too. The rich and poor live in the same country, yet their worlds differ so much. Therefore, this highlights that New York is a city with many vast contrasts.
