Student can lay on the floor and other students can lie objects end-to-end to measure the student from head to toe. Then record the measurements and compare who was tallest.

I know it is simple but using dice and the part/part/whole mat with manipulatives.

I use a mitten di-cut with numbers on them and the students have to count out that many snowballs (cotton ball) onto the mittens.

I used this nonstandard measurement activity last year to go with winter theme. It is still free on TPT. You could also easily make your own snowballs. We also did one after reading the mitten and measured how many mittens tall we are.

Making Sets to 10

Read: Ten Apples On Top- Place student's picture at the bottom of a pg. and students glue ten apples on their head.

Questions of the day. Students have stars and answer the question with their names on it under their answer. We count the answers as a class during circle time.

Shower curtain 10 frame

Get a shower curtain from the dollar store and draw a ten frame. Students can stand on curtain to represent different numbers.

We have the students lay on a piece of butcher paper and we trace their bodies. Students then color / add details to their body. When complete , we have a 5th grade class come down and help our students measure the different parts of their bodies using non standard measurement. They measure length of arm, leg , whole body ,etc.

Roll dice with different pictures on each side that corresponds with pictures at bottom of graph. As they roll they mark squares on bar graph and see at the end witch item has been rolled the most times.

Build a snowman

Students draw a number and build a snowman with that many snowballs. The great thing about this is they can then compare with their partner and talk about whose is taller, shorter, etc..

We have made snowmen on butcher paper. I give them a number on the first snowball and they have to draw the rest.

We have a snowball fight with pretend snowballs and count how many balls we can throw before we are hit.

Hallway Counting

We have red dots in our hallways as a way to control traffic etc, when we come to a red dot we stop and count out loud in a whisper and using fingers. We started counting to 5 and have been increasing by 5. It has been helping them with rote counting as well as patience waiting in line.

"Scatter Game"

Students dance around, and when music stops teacher will write a number and students have to form that number in a group (adding or taking away friends until they have the correct number in a group)

Magic Number game: Pick a number to be the magic number. Students go around the circle, each saying one number. The student who says the magic number sits down and the game continues until only one person is left standing.

A coworker shared a counting game where students all stand and count up to a number one at a time. They have to pay attention to the last number stated. When the student reaches the number, they sit down, then restart. Last one standing wins.

Students can separate goldfish by color and add them to a graph. They can count each color, compare amounts and use the terms greater than or less than. They can also eat them for snack at the end!

We use white pompoms or cotton balls as snowballs and students can roll a die twice to get two sets of snowballs to make a snowman. Then we write the final number on the whiteboard.

Groups of 10- to 100

Draw circles on the table and have students make groups of ten using cotton balls. This will help them when making groups to 100
