At this time Robert E. Lee had a second attempt to invade the North hoping to capture a northern city and convince the North to seek peace, which the Union successfully stopped. Many soldiers partook in this battle and there were approximately 50,000 casualties in this battle.   • Any victories on Northern soil put political pressure on Abraham Lincoln’s administration to negotiate a settlement to the war. 
  • It was a turning point of the war, Robert E. Lee changed his strategy and only fought a defensive war on Southern soil. 
  • Convinced Lee to never invade the North again.
  • Gettysburg Address was created soon after the war; it was a speech which Lincoln gave in memory of the soldiers who died. This speech addressed the government and basically said that a government and constitution run by the people will last forever.
