"It was the haircut that sent Mom over the edge. When I walked in the door, she looked at me hard, the corners of her mouth turning down. Then she looked away, back at the potatoes in the sink. Upstairs in the bathroom, I studied my hair in the mirror--short. It made me feel a little exposed, but then running my hand through what was left made me smile.

No one in my family ever talks about anything important, so Mom stayed silently upset and Dad acted like nothing had happened. I just wanted everyone to get over it. But then Mom started in.
