It never occured my mind that I might have subconsciously come in touch with gamification in context either in education or elsewhere. The example of IKEA is a fantastic one: you design a room and you place furniture in it at the comfort of your house. Also I have accepted Clippy's help, the Ribbon Hero, in many tutorials. The Quest to Learn whose aim is to make education more relevant to modern children has been presented to my colleagues and me during a workshop in CEDEFOP.During my MA studies in 2012-14, the Leeds Metropolitan University suggested experimenting with Khan Academy as an example of the use of gamification techniques in online education.

Honestly, now that I'm researching the gamification area,, I notice that I'm not as ignorant as I initially believed!!!!!

An exemple of gamification used by government is the Seveso game http://www.seveso.be/game

Seveso is the national industrial disaster prevention centre and they developed a small serious game to train 3 basic skills (enter nearest building, close doors and windows and listen to the media). More than training this game raised awareness about seveso issues.

One example of gamification that I came across is the fitness app Nike+. It challenges the user to reach his fitness goals and it rewards them with points called "NIkeFuel", with trophies and gifts. Also the user can share his/her accomplishments with friends.

I came across a project from our electricity supplier where you were supposed to save electricity during a whole year. They made an app that showed your progress in a game and as you saved you leveled in the app. I was very inspiring and many homes ended up saving a lot of energy that year.

In the supermarket you sometimes get free tickets if you have spend a specific amount of money. Of such a ticket you have to scratch away 3 times a layer and when you have a specific combination you win something. Very succesful if the things you can win are wanted by the children, because as a parent you will by more stuff in that supermarket just to get those tickets.

I don't know if it counts as gamification, but with the newest version of Skype it is easy to have a group conversation or video conference and this can prove very helpful when we want to work on the same project from distance.

Apart from that, many museums have virtual reality tours which are very interesting and helpful.

Even for adults, it is much more appealing and entertaining to gain knowledge in such ways. These interactive methods are more and more common. Using them in class is great: I remember teaching the Lewis and Clark's expedition with the help of a US website that was enacting their expedition with interactive modules, using geography maps, historical landmarks... That was great. I do not know if we can still access the site via Google. but it was a really captivating teaching/learning adventure.

For me, exercise is the most apparent one. There are apps like RunKeeper that will keep track of your successes and send you positive feedback as soon as you improve in some way. And then you can share your results online so that added pressure might help you succeed. Very nice tool for gym class.
