My Milkshake moment occurred during my first year teaching. I was teaching in a low income neighborhood in the West Philadelphia section of the city. I expected that the students would be on task and respectful based on what my student teaching was like. Sadly, I was mistaken. I had an extremely rough couple of months and was not sure what to do to reach my students. My students would fight with each other, run around I the classroom and constantly talk just to name a few of the classroom behaviors. I was not able to do my job as a teacher because of the many different and difficult behaviors in the classroom. I was willing to try anything to get my students on track for a successful school year.

Class Dojo and positive reinforcement to change the behavior in my classroom. These students wanted and needed the positive reward system that I began to implement in the classroom as part of the classroom management plan. They were not responding to negative consequences. I needed to change the classroom environment. Once I introduced Class Dojo, they worked hard to earn points to use at the end of the week for prizes. They loved hearing the noise of the computer every time they would receive a point or multiple points for being an Active Listener, walking properly in the hallway, being on task and a multitude of other positive behaviors. The students would feed off of each other and once one student was receiving positive praise the others would follow that lead.

to bring knowledge and information into each and everyone of my students. My job is to teach my students to be successful learners for the future and to make a difference in their lives. My job cannot be done without control of the classroom. Therefore, it is also my job to have control of my classroom and to establish the rules and expectations that are to be followed daily. The rules and consequences will be explained to my students so that they are made aware of them and what might happen if said rules are broken. Having an effective classroom management plan is key to having a successful school year.
