Go to a Doctor if the Cut:

• Won't stop bleeding.

• Is deep or gaping open.

• Is long (longer than a half-inch).

• Is on a joint (like a knee or knuckle).

• Was caused by an animal bite or something rusty.

• Always follow your doctor's specific instructions. This is the most important rule.

For Minor Accidental Cuts:

• Change the bandage daily or as directed.

• Keep the area clean and dry.

Go to a Doctor if the Cut:

• Won't stop bleeding.

• Is deep or the edges won't stay closed.

• Shows signs of infection (worsening pain, redness, pus, fever).

• Was from a rusty or dirty object (you may need a tetanus shot).

1. Clean: Squeeze gently to let it bleed a little, then wash with soap and water.

2. Rinse: Hold the wound under running water for a few minutes.

3. Cover: Apply antibiotic ointment and a clean bandage.

If a large object is stuck in the wound (like a large piece of glass or a tool):

• DO NOT pull it out.

• Leave it in place and get medical help immediately.

• The wound was caused by a rusty or dirty object.

• It's a deep wound (e.g., from stepping on a nail).

• It was from an animal or human bite.

• You see signs of infection like redness, swelling, pus, or worsening pain.

• You have not had a tetanus shot in the past 5 years.

• This is the most important rule. Do exactly what they told you.

2. Wound Care

• Keep the dressing clean and dry.

• Only change the bandage when and how your doctor instructed.

• Rest the injured area and keep it propped up to reduce swelling.

3. When to Call Your Doctor Immediately Call if you notice:

• Worsening pain, redness, or swelling.

• Pus, a bad smell, or a fever.

• Stitches coming apart.

• The skin flap changing color (looking very pale or dark).

4. Go to Your Follow-Up Appointments

• These are necessary to check your healing and remove stitches.

• Is on your head, especially if you have a bad headache, feel confused, dizzy, or are vomiting.

• Is causing severe pain, numbness, or tingling.

• Is swelling very quickly.

• Prevents you from being able to move a joint (like your wrist or ankle).

See your regular doctor if:

• It shows signs of infection (gets very warm, red, or you have a fever).

• It doesn't start to get better after a week or two.

• 1st-Degree: Red and painful skin (like a mild sunburn).

• 2nd-Degree: Blisters, swelling, and severe pain.

• 3rd-Degree: The skin looks white, leathery, or charred. Can be numb.

1. Cool Water: Hold the burn under cool (not cold) running water for 10-15 minutes.

2. Protect: Apply aloe vera or an antibiotic ointment and cover it loosely with a clean bandage.

3. Pain: Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.

For MAJOR Burns (All 3rd-degree and large 2nd-degree burns):

1. Call 911 immediately. This is a medical emergency.

2. Cover: Use a clean, dry sheet or cloth to cover the area.

3. Do NOT use ice, water, creams, or ointments.

4. Do NOT remove clothing that is stuck to the burn.
