Hello everyone, My name is Belen Olvera, and I am the counselor for Lamesa ISD. My professional perspective toward school counselors has significantly changed. According to the Texas Education Code, the primary responsibility of a school counselor is to counsel students to fully develop each student's academic, career, personal, and social abilities. Counselors work closely with students to help them succeed, and there is a lot of work that goes into helping students achieve their goals. Counselors are vital in any district to help students, staff and the community work together in creating students that our successful. This resource will be helpful to teachers, and paraprofessionals to guide in sharing student information. It is important to keep student information confidential but sometimes when to report information can become questionable. This topic aims to help you understand how to maintain student confidentiality, and when it is okay to share information.

Confidentiality is important in my field of education because it helps provide a safe environment for students while protecting their privacy. Protecting student's privacy is important in developing positive relationships with students. Students who build trusting relationships with their educators, or school professionals are able to meet their their academic and social needs more effectively.

Emerging Issues
Emerging issues that educators should be on the lookout for include the use of technology in the classroom. Technology and social media platforms have become so it is very easy to get carried away by the trend. Educators need to know the school's policy regarding technology or social media platforms. This issue is especially scary in smaller school districts where everyone knows everyone. I have witnessed several scenarios where an educator posts something vague about their classroom on their social media page, and still gets repercussions.
