In the Sumerian world the gods symbolized powers that were manifest in nature. The local god was an advocate for a given city in assembly of gods. The temple became the center point civic and religious pride. Thus, it was incumbent upon the city to preserve the god and his representative, the king, as well as possible.

Sumerian art uses realistic looking figures acting out identifiable narratives. The figures are cut from stone. Men are bare - chested and wear a kilt, whereas women have their left shoulder covered and right shoulder exposed. Both figures are hollowed out under their arms and between their legs. Nudity is a sign of debasement meaning only slaves or prisoners were nude. Sculptures were on stands to hold them upright and the intermixing of human and animal forms were common.
