Paul D is sleeping in a church. The church is described as cold. This reminds me of the way someone might be memorialized at a church when they have died. The coldness also adds onto this as corpses are cold and lifeless.

in this area of the text the author gave John's back story but contradicts the tough/angry guy image when he begins to start openly being guilty about having broken such news to Paul D. He is showing worry and care toward Paul D and friendship towards others who are mentioned. Theses emotions and actions don't exactly match up with his "I don't need anyone" image. I personally feel that this strays away from a common cold tone to the book and gives a warmer tone. This was a sudden charecter development brought on by his own actions.

Much like Emily said, the author had consistent Gothic elements.
