To Keep Stats:
         -Required to use DAKSTATS http://www.dakstats.com/websync/pages/SportGender.aspx?association=10&sg=WBA
SID is at the game inserting live stats
           - Coach also uses automated scorebook- Career book
         - Pitchers on the bench keep stats on paper charts in a binder. Each batter has a sheet- displays date, opponent, batter, pitcher-batter combo. This also charts the pitch ( where it is at)
       - Pitching Coach also has a chart close to coach- excel boxes for each hitter. Space for notes on pitchers
USED TO: determine the catcher tendency.
PROBLEM: lack of staff- just got a manager this year to track offensive plays- this is useful for plays to realize what they are doing wrong when at the plate. Lack of funds for better technology. "Not always ideal" - would be open to an ipad

What happens to data: The pitcher papers go into a file to be archived until play team again. The information is archived until a player graduates.

WHO USES: Catchers and Pitchers review the archived file before playing the team again.

The newspaper doesn't follow so that communication avenue is not applicable. SID will write a press release based on the play by play or ask the coaches.

OTHER NOTES KEPT:
Tracy creates a practice plan for each practice
Notes kept in a notebook
If on the field writes notes on lineup card and transfers over
some notes are for right in the moment and others are for later.
Looks at notes in the pregame warm up
Makes notes of batters as game goes on.
IMPORTANCE OF STATS:
"Stats drive players on how to approach work."
"Go to class and get a grade, stats are those grades in the game."
Awards for all conference and all American voting are directed by stats

To Keep Stats:
Assistant Coach: Uses an IPAD app from Art of Coaching (brand new) -allows for drawing- generates reports following game- progresses with the game. triggers block and digging.
Players on Bench: track passing and how many points scored (these are just a snap shot for the coaches)

What happens to data:
Data players track is inserted into a spreadsheet manually by assistant coach.
Players can come to coach or get stats off DAKSTATS if they want to.
At the end of the year the data is used to break down and make Goals

IN Recruitment:
"Stats in HS don't matter much" - although she said the college targets stat leaders but mostly it is about watching
Extra:
- usually doesn't look at stats too much after
-Spends 20 hrs a week reviewing video of other teams and puts those notes into a hard notebook
- no practice plan because it limits creativity but used to create them for the week and post them for players.
- Likes the app uses because gives more accurate info than players could have

- Start taking notes at recruitment/ tryouts of agility and endurance- height, reach, mile - comes in helpful when 2 players are even and have to choose one over the other.

TAKES NOTES BY: During tryouts: writing on a clipboard and then creating an excel sheet- coach doing it or an admin assistant- don't trust players to insert.
During game: players on bench keeping a paper version then math for caculations.

WHY KEEP STATS:
For goal setting as team and individual players. (players have to go to coach for stats - self motivating tool.)

To rationalize playing time if two players are close in skill.

WHEN LOOK AT: after games

PROBLEMS:
When there are games every night there is not time inbetween to insert stats and the archiving gets behind.

Players who are keeping the stats on bench become disengaged in the game because they are just focusing on one player to keep notes.

Sees a need to transfer data between seasons because often player skill/ recommendation passed on verbally between coaches but sometimes coach move or retire.

Need in volleyball for highschool stats to transfer to club statistics

Stats only tell some of the story would like to see a few sentences on each player - note summary aspect.

Don't see enough club coaches using stats.

COMMUNICATION TO THIRD PARTIES:
Reporters who come to the game ask coach for info/ stats otherwise, have to send to a list of media following game.

OTHER INFO:
The grade level dictates how much stats are collected. Often freshman year the focus is just on one element.

When swimmers are done with one race they immediately go to a coach for feedback and that verbal discussion is usually enough for a swimmer to correct.

During meets times (splits) are kept but video is also very important to
see how they swam(number of strokes, etc.) - says video is more important.

A lot of corrections swimmers need can be made on the fly so there is not a lot of note taking.
WHO KEEPS: Student managers are in the stands recording the video

WHAT HAPPENS TO DATA: Student managers put the footage on a shared drive in each swimmer's folder so they can view it. Student view it at their own interest (better swimmers more often) and then can discuss with coach. Looking at video to count strokes and get a better understanding of pacing.

USA Swimming has video analysis software at competitions but Mizzou doesn't have those resources.

HOW LONG DATA KEPT: Footage kept for a season but try to keep championship video longer.

Will pull footage from other good athletes or from the Olympics to use as examples and stats to understand what a good time is.
Films good swimmers at meets to design teaching/ coaching around.

Swimming feedback and notes is mostly in the coaches heads and they make corrections based on visuals rather than stats most of the time but is a combination.

GAPS: You cannont view stats on an entire university team across the country - you can look at individual players though.

Sometimes there are gaps in the time of uploading the footage.

The amount of data that is collected and used was downsized because was time consuming to send out files individually. - video is often underutilized because of this.

SCOUTING: He goes to meets where he knows there will be good athletes and films on his iPhone. Junior National Meets. Also a lot of talking to other coaches.

College Swimming.com is a large database that ranks HS Swimmers nationally - metrics from meets, allows players to insert video or however much data they want.

Data retrieval is growing

Currently Cedric inputs stats from games into an online system, the biggest annoyance being the amount of time that it takes, but he doesn't really see a way around it and thinks that a mobile app might actually be more of a pain

The people who access the stats once entered are coaches, the players, and the media.

Thinks that colleges and professional teams could potentially benefit from a quicker system, but the Battle team doesn't currently need a quicker system.
