TITLE: Why Men Oppress Women (The Psychology of Male Dominance)

AUTHOR(S): Steve Taylor Ph.D.

PUBLISH DATE: August 20, 2012

WEBSITE NAME: Psychology Today

WEB ADDRESS: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/out-the-darkness/201

DESCRIPTION:

The article, “Why Men Oppress Women”, talks about how women have been enslaved all throughout history. After being colonized women have had to follow male orders. Women would get punished if they didn’t do what men told them to do. This long history of punishments has made women fear men. The fear was mentally internalized in women’s brains that they obey male commands. This article says, “Most Human beings suffer from an underlying psychological disorder, which I call ‘Humania’. Men deny women the right to make decisions so that they can make them for them, leave women unable to direct their own lives so that they can direct their lives for them”(Taylor). This means men control women and tell them what they are able to achieve and what they aren’t. If women had more power they would have a lot of confidence in their goals. If women weren’t constantly put down by men they would feel more empowered. If women felt empowered they wouldn’t let men boss the around. But since we live in a patriarchal society women feel inferior to men. This feeling has been passed down for generations. This fear is an internalized oppression for women. Women are messed with psychologically by patriarchy.

TITLE: Will Women Ever Be Equal To Men?

AUTHOR(S): Briana Acevedo- Gallagher

PUBLISH DATE: September 11, 2016

WEBSITE NAME: ODYSSEY

WEB ADDRESS: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/will-women-ever-be-equal

Description:
The article, “Will Women Ever Be Equal To Men?”, talked about how women victimize themselves and always complain about how they are less than men. If women stood up for more power then maybe women would be seen as more in society. Women birth men so why is it that women aren’t more valued? The only difference between men and women is our given sex. Other than that we are both human and have the same potential to lead. There should be more feminists to advocate for more female rights in order to change society.

This article says, “We may be victimizing ourselves and acting that we are the ones that are forever innocent but if you dig deeper, that may not be the case”(Gallagher). This quote shows how women are getting a mentality that we are victims. This can be an effect of living in a patriarchal society. These types of ideas are created after being treated like less than men. Women begin to feel less than men but that’s only because they have that mentality. If women actually believed they could gain the same power as men there would be more feminists. However since the belief that women are less is internally stuck in people’s mentality it is hard to make women stand up for themselves. This article says, “You can date a slew of men, but if you started dating when you had a low self esteem or dependent, you may lose sight of yourself and what you really want out of life, neglecting your aspirations and desires that you hold deeply in your heart just for a man”(Gallagher). This means that if you date a man you can forget about your goals because most women work to obey her man. A women will have a whole career but once she gets in a relationship she becomes dependent of her man. This dependence is what lead women to quit their career and become housewifes. In a way some women believe that they should just stay at home and get everything given to them by a man. When they allow this to happen they don’t realize how they gave him power to control them. This is an example of how living in a patriarchal society messes with women psychology.

TITLE: Patriarchy Is Alive and Well

AUTHOR(S): Deborah King

PUBLISH DATE: May 6th, 2009

WEBSITE NAME: Psychology Today

WEB ADDRESS: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/mining-the-headlines/200905/patriarchy-is-alive-and-well

DESCRIPTION:
The article ,”Patriarchy is Alive and Well”, talks about how women can get beat by their man but they believe it is ok. An example was given on how the singer Rihanna stood with her man even though he would beat her. Women believe their only purpose is to create a family and serve her man. A lot of religions state that women should be under men. When society says men are more valuable than women, women begin to believe that. The article states, “They all knew that their main purpose in life was to bear and raise children. And maybe, in the afterlife, if they were good and pure enough, they would get their heavenly reward . . . if their husband allowed it”(King). This means that some women believe that their worth must be earned from serving their man. Some women believe that if they don’t serve their man then they are worthless. Ideas like these are side effects of living in a patriarchal society. In a society where women had more power, women’s mindsets of their worth would change.

Social Theory Solution

In order to stop women from psychologically feeling inferior to men they need to know that they are being psychologically affected by patriarchy. When they realize that they can get more power they can feel less inferior to men. We need more feminists to advocate for women's rights. We need to inform women that they can be someone important in life. Women need to know that they don’t need to serve a man. Women should be more independent so that they don’t allow men to boss them around. We can start off by praising women’s achievements so that they begin to have confidence in themselves. Women need to stick together and empower one another. There should be more programs and campaigns that help women get more opportunities. If women had it easier to get good stable jobs maybe then they would try to be someone important in society. It only takes a minute to appreciate hard work of women. We must open women’s eyes so they know their worth. Women who are psychologically affected to an extreme point should go to counseling. Counseling can help them raise their self worth. Our young generation should begin to see women and men as equal. Our elders may have sexist beliefs but that doesn’t mean we should. If our generation believes women can have more power we should do everything in our power to achieve that. Once women begin to be treated more equal to men then women will slowly stop being psychologically affected by patriarchy.
