Overview

Zumbi, also known as Zumbi dos Palmares, was a Brazilian quilombo leader and the last leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest quilombo during the colonial period. Zumbi was born in the former Captaincy of Pernambuco, in a region that today belongs to the municipality of União dos Palmares, in the state of Alagoas.

Birth: 1655, Serra da Barriga

Death: November 20, 1695, Quilombo dos Palmares

Children: Motumbo, Acaiuba Zambi, Aristogíton dos Palmares, Harmódio dos Palmares

Parents: Aqualtune, Sabina

Siblings: Andalaquituche

Spouse: Dandara dos Palmares (until 1694)

Predecessor: Ganga Zumba

What is the true story of Zumbi dos Palmares?

Zumbi dos Palmares was a military leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, a community of escaped enslaved people in colonial Brazil, and one of the greatest symbols of resistance against slavery. Born in 1655, he was captured as a child, baptized, but escaped to the quilombo around the age of 15, becoming a skilled military leader and the successor of Ganga Zumba. He led the resistance against Portuguese attacks, but the quilombo was destroyed in 1694. Zumbi was captured and executed on November 20, 1695—a date that later became the National Day of Zumbi and Black Consciousness in Brazil.

Why was Zumbi dos Palmares killed?

Zumbi became a symbol of the harsh and courageous struggle of Black people against slavery. As a kind of king of the Quilombo dos Palmares, he encouraged enslaved people to escape and led several resistance campaigns against extermination expeditions until retreating into guerrilla warfare. He was betrayed and killed in an ambush.

What is the Quilombo dos Palmares like today?

Today, the Quilombo dos Palmares is a Memorial Park located in Serra da Barriga, Alagoas, honoring the struggle and resistance of the historical quilombo. The site is an archaeological area recognized as a Cultural Heritage of Brazil, where visitors can see replicas of old dwellings, exhibitions about history, and cultural performances. Besides being a tourist and educational destination, it serves as a space for reflection on racism and racial inequality and as a celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture.

What is the Quilombo dos Palmares Memorial Park?

Location: Serra da Barriga, União dos Palmares (Alagoas, Brazil)

Attractions:

Replicas of quilombola houses made of clay and straw.

Spaces for cultural performances.

Lookout points with panoramic views.

Signs and audio guides telling the history of the site.

A mobile app that allows visitors to take selfies with virtual representations of leaders such as Zumbi, Dandara, and Acotirene.

Importance:

It is a place of memory and resistance that offers an opportunity to reflect on the struggle for freedom and equality and the resistance against slavery in Brazil.

Events and Celebrations

The site hosts important celebrations, especially on Black Consciousness Day (November 20), which is now a national holiday.

On this date, there are concerts, capoeira circles, religious ceremonies, and other cultural activities to celebrate Zumbi dos Palmares and the struggle of Black people.

Beyond the Memorial Park

Although the historical Quilombo dos Palmares was destroyed, the concept of the quilombo as a space of resistance and self-organization remains alive.

Today, there are many quilombola communities that maintain ancestral traditions and face contemporary challenges, often in rural areas, living from subsistence farming and extractivism.

For these modern quilombola communities, celebrating Zumbi is fundamental to strengthening the fight for rights, combating racism, and promoting racial equality.

Pais: Aqualtune, Sabina

Irmãos: Andalaquituche

Cônjuge: Dandara dos Palmares (a 1694)

Antecessor(a): Ganga Zumba

Além do Parque Memorial

‧₊˚ ┊🇺🇸Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey: The Women Who Suffered for the History of Medicine:

The history of gynecological medicine is marked by scientific advances that came at a high cost to the dignity and lives of enslaved Black women. In the 19th century, in the United States, physician J. Marion Sims, known for many years as the "father of modern gynecology," performed a series of surgical experiments on three enslaved women: Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey. These women were subjected to painful procedures, without anesthesia or the right to consent, becoming symbols of the racism and exploitation at the root of much medical knowledge.

Around the 1840s, Sims lived in Montgomery, Alabama, and was searching for a way to treat vesicovaginal fistula, a lesion that occurs after prolonged childbirth and hinders urinary control. White patients with this condition were considered untouchable by the medicine of the time, but enslaved Black women, viewed as property, were forced to serve as human guinea pigs.

Among them was Anarcha, a young woman of approximately 17 who, after an extremely difficult birth, developed a severe fistula. Sims performed more than 30 experimental surgeries on her, trying to perfect his technique. Each operation was performed without anesthesia, as the doctor claimed that "Black women felt less pain"—a racist and inhumane justification, based on pseudoscientific ideas that sought to uphold the inferiority of Black people.

Lucy, another young enslaved woman, was also a victim of these experiments. She was between 17 and 19 years old when Sims operated on her. In his accounts, Sims himself describes serious complications after one of the surgeries, including fever and infection, which demonstrates the suffering and life-threatening risk Lucy faced.

Betsey (or Betsy) was also subjected to repeated surgical procedures without consent. Little is known about her personal life, but records confirm that she participated in Sims's experiments, undergoing multiple interventions until the doctor achieved the desired result.

These three women were not just "patients," but victims of a science that disregarded the humanity of Black people. Because they were enslaved, they had no right to refuse or question what was imposed on them. The context of the time denied Black women any autonomy over their own bodies, and their names have nearly disappeared from history while Sims's was exalted for decades.

Sims's practices are now widely condemned by medical institutions and historians. He was once honored with statues and titles, but over time, his image has been reinterpreted. In 2018, for example, the statue of J. Marion Sims was removed from Central Park in New York City after protests demanding recognition for the women who suffered in the name of science.

Conversely, Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey began to receive tributes, especially through the historical reinterpretation of Black authors and artists. The most striking of these tributes is the work "The Mothers of Gynecology," created by artist Michelle Browder in Montgomery, Alabama. The sculptures represent the three women in monumental size, reclaiming their stories and transforming pain into memory and resistance.

Researchers such as Harriet A. Washington, in her book "Medical Apartheid," and historians from Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institute emphasize that Sims's case reveals how racism shaped medical practices in the United States and how the exploitation of Black bodies contributed to modern science. These studies also point out that, while Sims's name was preserved, the stories of Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey were nearly lost—a reflection of the systematic erasure of Black and enslaved people in official history.

Unfortunately, little is known about the fate of these three women after the experiments. Their names have survived only because they were mentioned in Sims's medical records. This makes their remembrance even more significant: they represent the silenced voices of countless Black women who suffered abuse in the name of "scientific progress."

Today, the memory of Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey serves as a symbol of resistance and historical recognition. They are not just victims, but unwitting pioneers of modern medicine, whose bodies and pain were exploited for advancements that benefited later generations. Recognizing their stories is a fundamental step toward building a more ethical, equitable, and historically conscious medicine.

♡...Verbos Utilizados {🇺🇸}

1. is

2. know

3. tell

4. was

5. played

6. bathed

7. put

8. made

9. scare

10. went

11. used to be

12. imitating

13. wearing

14. liked

15. going

16. had

17. sing

18. dance

19. fish

20. would prank call

21. run away

22. leaving

♡...

Biography of Luís Gama ♡

Luís Gama was a Brazilian writer, lawyer, journalist, and abolitionist, born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1830. He was the son of a free African woman and a Portuguese nobleman. However, when he was still a child, his father sold him illegally into slavery to pay off debts. Despite this, Luís Gama managed to free himself at the age of 18 by proving that he had been enslaved illegally.

After gaining his freedom, he became a self-taught intellectual and one of the most important figures in the fight against slavery in Brazil. Without having a law degree, he used his deep knowledge of the law to defend enslaved people in court and helped to free hundreds of them.

Luís Gama was also a talented poet, known for his sharp humor and strong criticism of social injustice. His poems, collected in Primeiras Trovas Burlescas de Getulino (1859), denounced racism and inequality in Brazilian society.

He died in 1882, a few years before slavery was officially abolished in Brazil, but his work and courage inspired generations of activists and continue to be celebrated today.

---

My grandmother was born in 1940, in a small countryside town. When she was young, she helped her parents on the farm and took care of her younger brothers and sisters. She liked to read and dreamed of becoming a teacher. When she was twenty years old, she moved to the big city and started working at a small school. There, she met my grandfather and they got married a few years later. They had three children and lived together for more than fifty years. My grandmother always cooked delicious meals and told wonderful stories. She taught her children and grandchildren to be kind and to value education. On weekends, she visited her friends and went to church. Everyone loved her very much because she helped people whenever she could. She passed away a few years ago, but she left many beautiful memories for our family.

Past verbs: was born, helped, took care, liked, dreamed, moved, started, met, got married, had, lived, cooked, told, taught, visited, went, loved, passed away, left.

Autobiography of Alison

My name is Alison, I was born on March 17, 2008, and I am currently 17 years old. Since I was little, I have always been a curious person full of dreams. I was born in a small town, where I learned the value of friendship, family, and simplicity. My parents have always taught me the importance of studying and working hard for what I want, and that is something I carry with me every day.

During my childhood, I was a very active boy who loved playing outside, playing soccer, and exploring everything around me. I have always enjoyed learning new things, especially related to technology and nature. At school, I’m sometimes a bit shy, but I like to participate in class and I always try to get good grades. I’m proud to say that, even with difficulties, I never gave up on my goals.

I am currently in high school and have already started thinking about my future. I plan to pursue a career in the field of computer science or engineering, because I really like understanding how things work and coming up with new ideas. I also dream of traveling the world, discovering new cultures, and living different experiences.

I am a calm person who values loyalty and respect. I like spending time with my friends, playing video games, and listening to music in my free time. I believe that each day is a new opportunity to learn something and become a better person.

Even though I’m still young, I’ve already learned that life isn’t always easy, but with effort and patience, everything is possible. My greatest wish is to build a future that I can be proud of, helping my family and inspiring other people. This is my story, and I know there is still much more to come.

Biography of Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954, in the rural town of Kosciusko, Mississippi, USA. Raised by her grandmother during her early childhood, Oprah grew up in an environment of extreme poverty but developed a deep love for reading and storytelling—skills that would later shape her remarkable career.

Her childhood was marked by hardship, including instability and traumatic experiences. As a teenager, she moved between the homes of her mother, Vernita Lee, and her father, Vernon Winfrey. Despite adversity, Oprah excelled in school and discovered her talent for public speaking. At age 17, she won a public-speaking contest that earned her a scholarship to study communication at Tennessee State University.

Rise in Television

Oprah began working in radio while still in high school and soon transitioned to television. She became the first Black female news anchor at a station in Nashville. Her warm, empathetic style caught the attention of producers, and in 1984, she was invited to host a morning talk show in Chicago. Within months, the show became the most-watched program in the city.

In 1986, the program was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and launched nationally. It ran for 25 years, becoming the most influential talk show in American history. Oprah revolutionized daytime television by introducing a more personal, emotionally driven approach to interviews—something that became her signature style. Her recommendations, especially through her famous Oprah’s Book Club, often turned books and products into instant best-sellers, a phenomenon known as the “Oprah Effect.”

Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy

Throughout her career, Oprah built a media empire. She founded Harpo Productions, making her one of the first Black women to own her own production company. She later established O, The Oprah Magazine, several digital platforms, and in 2011 launched her own cable network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

Oprah is also known for her extensive philanthropic work. In 2007, she opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, providing education and opportunities to young women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Over the decades, she has contributed millions of dollars to education, disaster relief, and programs supporting marginalized communities.

Legacy and Impact

Oprah Winfrey is widely regarded as one of the most influential women in the world. She has received numerous honors, including multiple Emmy Awards, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

From a childhood marked by poverty and trauma, Oprah rose to become a global icon of resilience, empathy, and empowerment. Her voice, vision, and generosity continue to inspire millions around the world.
