"Mindset is not entirely an individual matter. It is continually influenced by peers, teachers, parents and the wider culture. As educators, what can we do to help our students cultivate a growth mindset in our schools and classrooms?"

It all begins with US. We have to do the intrinsic work and identify our own biases and come up with a plan on how we would be agents of change. We have to think before we say anything about a students' ability & rephrase this into a growth mindset way. All students are capable of learning English or whatever the objective is, we just have to open the doors and show them how to - judgement free.

Effective praise goes beyond the binary of simply praising or not praising students; it focuses on the thoughtful delivery of feedback that genuinely fosters growth and motivation. Specificity is key—by identifying the exact behaviors or skills being recognized, educators can help students understand what they did well and why it matters. Additionally, incorporating opportunities for self-reflection allows students to internalize their achievements and recognize their progress. Ultimately, the effectiveness of praise lies in its ability to build a positive, supportive learning environment that empowers students to embrace challenges.

So often I hear: "this generation is so sensitive" when referring to my generation and those that come after me (gen z, gen alpha). This always bothered me because as this article discusses, it really does matter how to word your praise that will make the difference in whether someone has a fixed vs. growth mindset. It has nothing to do with necessarily being "too sensitive" and more about being conscious about how you react in order to receive your intended consequence, which in this case is a growth mindset.

When Effort Makes You "Feel Dumb"

The "personal sting" Docketrman and Blackwell mention is very real, and many of our students are sensitive. If we are unsympathetic, it can be read as an ego.

Last year, a freshman wrote in his notebook that he was afraid he would "never learn English." I talked to him casually about it, mentioned it to a supportive parent during our November conferences. He's now in my ELA4 class and is one of the students who takes the most risks while improving his language. He is a student who succeeds with less effort in his other content classes, and he's struggled with accepting the struggle. These articles make me wonder about the students who are on the other side of the coin. How I can actively draw all of my students' attention to this part of the process of learning, especially the students who maybe struggle with school in general and not just language class?
