Formative assessment

The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments:

help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work

help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately

Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value. Examples of formative assessments include asking students to:

draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic

submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture

turn in a research proposal for early feedback

Summative assessment

The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark.

Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Examples of summative assessments include:

a midterm exam

a final project

a paper

a senior recital

Information from summative assessments can be used formatively when students or faculty use it to guide their efforts and activities in subsequent courses.

What the assessment is and why it is used

Ipsative Assessment is the practice of defining a student’s progress based on their earlier work and focuses on progress through their subsequent work. Ipsative assessment uses a ‘personal best’ approach, like athletics, the student’s own progress becomes the benchmark of successful performance. Self-made targets also help students to not only become more self-reliant but aids both parties in identifying where there is more work to do. Students are also more likely to act on ipsative feedback because it is customized and not group comparative. According to Dr. Gywneth Hughes, when students are assessed in this way, ‘they can experience pride in their work and develop a long-term view of learning.’

Fun fact, the word ipsative drives from the Latin ispe meaning “of the self.”

An example of the type of assessment

1: Locate examples of a student’s creative writing. You need an example of their earlier work and current work.

The teacher also creates a record of the ongoing assessment in an electronic database or separate paper file. The record should detail the student’s feedback, improvements, and goals.

2: Ask the student what she considers her weaknesses and then reflects on how she may have improved in subsequent work.

The student’s story structure has improved, as has her grammar. The teacher and student identify a lack of descriptions in her stories and think they are a bit short. The student is to review suitable adjectives to describe her fictional world.

3: Decide on how the student can progress and suggest the next steps.

The student should maintain consistency in story structure and grammar. It is agreed that descriptions for locations and characters will be the main area for improvement for her next submission. Set a date for the next meeting and discussion.

References

Hughes, G. (2014, December 9). Want to help students improve their work?

Diagnostic assessment usually occurs at the beginning of learning (i.e. new semester or new unit). It allows a teacher to collect as much information as they can about what students know. Teacher can collect and use data to create a realistic lesson plan that addresses students' learning needs. They can also make changes to their lessons by incorporating topics that may strengthen students' knowledge.

Examples of diagnostic assessments include:
a) surveys / questionnaires: possibly asking students what they know, what they hope to learn, etc. This type of assessment can be conducted online

b) Conference/ interview with students

c) Pre-tests (before a new unit)

d) Journals and/or Reflections

https://harappa.education/harappa-diaries/diagnostic-assessment/

This focuses on "meta cognitive skills" developed through self reflection and goal setting. It pushes students to consider questions such as the following:

*What type of learner am I?
*What approaches to learning help me learn best?
*What resources are available to me to help me learn more?
*What goals would I like to meet in learning, and how can I achieve them?

Assessment OF Learning is just another way to say summative assessment. Summative assessments are evaluations of individual students' achievement of learning goals. Summative assessments (assessments of learning) should be based on learning objectives, based on what was taught in class, and they should be done only after students are given time to practice and prepare. They can take many forms but commonly take the following forms:

*Exams
*Presentations
*Papers/essays
*Portfolios
*Projects

Projects can serve as assessments of learning, but projects are often "squishy" and are sometimes an ineffective way to check whether students have met certain learning goals. Tests tend to be less authentic and engaging but tend to provide more accurate information about student achievement of learning objectives.
