The blood donation is referring to someone who voluntarily draws their blood. According to bloodcenters.org, someone needs blood every two seconds and also their studies found that one out of every seven people admitted to ward in the hospital are in need of blood. On 8 until 9 October 2014, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) had organized an event of blood donation under sub-expoconvo. The blood donation event took place at a very spacious area which was at Amphitheatre UMP.The event collaborated with Pusat Kesihatan Pelajar (PKP) and Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA). This event we choose this event because it was our first time experience to donate blood. The experience was overwhelming for us.

As if we remembered correctly, it was a beautiful day. The sun was bright and the sky as blue as the depth of ocean. It was pleasing to the eyes. Around 9 o’clock in the morning, we arrived at the amphitheatre. We move to the counters to register. We had to line up and we were given a form. We had to fill the form. Several people were pushing each other to register themselves. We waited until it was our turn to be called. At the same time, we can see other participants' face were nervous and excited. There was also a check point before donation. The check point actually was our medical checkup in our preparation before we did the blood donation. In every check point, the doctor asked about our health. Each check point would be different question to be asked about our health condition. At the first check point, we had to do some test such as blood pressure test. This was where the equipment was strapped on your arm and pressure was applied. During the test we can feel the strap gripping our arm tight, for a while we could not feel our fingers cause they got numb. Last check point would be the signature of the doctor that approved us to donate blood.

Next, our name had been called and it’s was time for us to donate our blood. The nurse politely asked us to move to the chair provided and laid our back. The friendly nurse started to prepare things for the drawing blood process. Then the nurse took our hand and applied some alcohol to our arms. The pungent smell made us sick. We could feel the soft cotton touching our skin. As soon as the cotton was removed, we feel the coldness as the alcohol evaporated along with the heat on our skin. The nurse took out a huge needle, it looked so sharp and pointy. As the needle got closer to our vein, our heart rate increased and pounded harder. But before you know it, the pointy needle was already poking through our vein. After that, she gave us a PVC so that, we could squeeze it to ensure the blood flowing. This was the highlight when a new, sterile needle was inserted into the vein in our hands. We heard some of the participants screaming. Sometimes, our hearts beat very fast. We felt the blood flow in our hands. Very red thick blood was clearly seen by us flow into the blood bag. The nurse told us to keep our finger moving by holding the PVC. As we remembered, we could feel the thickness of the needle and it was just like when we pinched the fleshy, soft underside of our arms. After a few minute, the needle was removed. It was a bit painful after the needle came out of our skin. The part that the needle injected start swollen and our hands felt cramp.

After the blood donation was done, the nurse applied clear yet concentrated, strong smelled fluid onto the donated area. She said that the fluid was used to avoid the blood from getting out from the skin and germs to enter the area. Then, we were asked to take a rest for ten minutes at the bay nearby and were given pie and hot tea. The creamy pie and sweet tea really made us feeling energetic and refreshing. Next, which was the best part, we were given lots of souvenir. They were cute and colourful. We also got certificates for appreciating our participation in this event. From there, we overheard people talking about the advantages of blood donation. Those made us feel excited and we could not wait for the next blood donation event.

In a nutshell, we applied almost five senses before, during and after this amazing event. We still remember the feeling during the event and we never forget them. This was the best experience ever in our lives. Since this event was warm-welcomed by students and staffs, we hope that the next series will be having an improvement in any aspect. For example, UMP must held the event at bigger place and get a better management. Even though that we must hold our scared while donate, we really enjoyed it and it was really worth the moment.
