D.B

1) “He’s got a lot of dough, now. He didn’t use to. He used to be just a regular writer, when he was home… Now he’s out in Hollywood, D.B. being a prostitute” (4)
2) This reveals that D.B is comparatively very successful compared to Holden. Although he did not start out as wealthy and famous, he was still a great writer once and successful in his own ways but eventually made it into the entertainment industry.
3) This relationship between Holden and D.B and his description of him demonstrates that Holden held a lot of respect for D.B when he was more “ordinary”, but knows that the entertainment industry can be corrupted and he believes D.B. is involved with all the Hollywood fame and money, losing sight of who he was once.
4)

Mr Spencer

1) “I’d like to put some sense in that head of yours, boy, I’m trying to help you. I'm trying to help you, if I can” (18)
2) This reveals that Mr. Spencer is someone that is honest and tries to help his students succeed. He looks out for their future and is hard on them to prepare them for their futures instead of passing them and giving them an easy way out.
3) The relationship between Mr. Spencer and Holden is complicated because Holden holds a lot of respect for Mr Spencer, but he also does not want to hear what he needs to hear and would rather want to hear things sugarcoated. He knows inside that Mr. Spencer is right and this reveals that Holden does not like to face the truth and is in denial about his real issues.
4)

Robert Ackley

1) “The whole time he roomed next to me, I never even once saw him brush his teeth. They always looked mossy and awful...Besides that, he had a lot of pimples… and not only that, but he had a terrible personality. He was also sort of a nasty guy” (23)
2) This reveals that Ackley was not the most hygienic person at Pencey and he did not seem to care about his appearance or going to school events. He was not as uptight as the other boys here and did not uphold the stereotype of being rich and clean.
3) What this reveals about Holden is that he cares about who his friends are and who he considers those close to him. There are certain things that he can’t oversee, such as hygiene or a strange personality despite Ackley’s fondness of Holden.
4)

Stradlater

1) “He always looked good when he was finished fixing himself up, but he was a secret slob anyway, if you knew him the way I did. The reason he fixed himself up to look good was because he was madly in love with himself” (31)
2) This shows that Stradlater only cared about his physical appearance and he seems to be very superficial. He does not care about his own personal hygiene and is only clean and cut on the surface.
3) This reveals that Holden does not hold as much respect for Stradlater as most people do. He makes it seem that most people do not know Stradlater the way that he does and people probably have a twisted impression on Stradlater. Although Holden does not expose him to everyone, he still has his own personal critiques about Stradlater as a person.
4)

1) “Her mother and father were divorced. Her mother was married again to some booze hound… all I ever saw him do was booze all the time and listen to every single goddamn mystery program on thee radio” (37)
2) This shows that Jane is very delicate. As mentioned before, she was someone who was very damaged and she did not have the best family life growing up.
3) This shows that Holden cares about Jane a lot and inside does not want Stradlater to go on a date with her because he knows that he wants to date her for the wrong reasons. It also demonstrates that Holden has a soft spot for Jane and cares about her wellbeing and is concerned about her getting hurt further because she had a rough childhood growing up.
4)

Allie

1) “My brother Allie had this left-handed fielder’s mitt. The thing that was descriptive about it though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink. He wrote them on it so he’d have something to read when he was in the field and nobody was up to bat” (43)
2) This shows that Allie was extremely smart and thoughtful, even while doing physical activities such as baseball. As mentioned, he was a genius and although he was younger, a lot of people looked up to him and praised him for how smart he was.
3) What this reveals about Holden is that he is very reminiscent about his relationship with Allie and is a sensitive person more than he lets on. He has had his own issues and problems in life but does not complain or reveal much about it until the story unravels itself further. He had a good relationship with Allie and looked to him as a role model despite Allie being two years younger than Holden.
4)
