One evening after praying Mahmouds apartment complex is bombed and Mahmouds family evacuates the building and gets in the Car to cross the boarder out of Syria. The Family is stopped at the boarder by Military soldiers who hitch a ride out of Syria, the men tell Mahmouds family to go a different way. After a couple minutes on the new route their car is shot! The man next to Mahmood is killed and Mahmoud's car is destroyed, they all make it out safely and head for the border. After waiting many days in Izmir, Turkey the boat finally arrives at the dock, this boat will take Mahmoud's family out of Syria to Germany. The ride goes horrible and the family ends up back on land. Mahmood's family is caught in a riot and sent to temporary jail. Isabel traveled far and the journey was very hard. Facing challenges like the heat, the hole in the boat causing water to leak into the boat, wear down on the metal and Ivan being killed by sharks. The journey took 4 days and 4 nights. Isabel's mom gave birth to a baby boy who she named Mariano and Isabel loves him so much. Josef, his dad, his mom, and sister board the St Louis to start their escape from Hitler to Cuba. The journey goes well but Josef's dad is in very bad mental condition from the Concentration Camps. Because of this Josef's dad jumps off the St Louis while it is parked at sea and is escorted to a hospital in Cuba. The Refugees are not allowed in Cuba so they are split into three different destinations where the Ship will let them off instead of Cuba. Josef's family is forced leave their dad in Cuba and they are assigned to go to France.
