Since creating musical manuscripts was very expensive due to the cost of the parchment, and good amount of time to write an entire copy, only the very wealthy institutions were able to produce manuscripts that have survived until today. These institutions are generally the church and church institutions, as monasteries, although some secular works were also kept in these institutions. These manuscript traditions do not reflect much of the popular music of that era.

The medieval music is composed by two periods: Romanesque and Gothic.

In medieval music can be distinguished musical phenomena, most notably the Gregorian chant, polyphony and secular music.

The Gregorian chant was very important, music is the only preserved before the ninth century. It was strictly a type of vocal music and with one voice, or at most, with an accompaniment based parallel fifths. It was as a result of a series of economic change and the birth of the vernaculars that emerged secular music, which could be expressed desires and aspirations.

The real stars of the new style were the troubadours (langue d'oc, or Provençal), the troubadours (langue d'oil or Old French) and German Minnesänger. They were poets musicians singing all human feelings, its main theme especially love, war and nature. This music is characterized by a much sharper rate than the Gregorian and varied and depends on the mood of the author (sad, happy, loving, warrior ...). New types of Dance and the highlight was the fact accompanied by musical instruments were created.

They are the sole transmitters of popular non-liturgical music, but then the most advanced procedures and innovations from church singing of poetic tropes and sequence. Apart from circus skills, jugglers generally accompanied with musical instruments prohibited by the Church because of his former ties to the pagan life.
