This can be very important when students are learning new information. Teachers want students to be able to think about what they already know about the content to help guide what they would like to learn. When students activate that background knowledge, this allows them to connect to their learning. When previewing knew content it is always a great tool to use connections with prior knowledge to learn new material. From Marzano's Design Question 2, Research tells us that students must actively process new information in order to retain it, and in doing so interact with other students, the teacher, and the content (Edwards). This is so important because if students don't connect with other students, the teacher, and the content, then they aren't learning new information. Design Question 2 guides teachers in designing instruction that allows students to construct knowledge through their interactions, an important step in moving up the ladder to self-directed learning (Edwards). When students are moving up this ladder of self-directed learning then they are learning new content based on real world interactions. This also helps students to connect more with the material. This moves education away from the old model where teachers processed the information, shared it through lecture, and had students repeat it back on a test(Edwards). Students are actually guiding their own instruction through prior knowledge and connections with the content.
