Once Upon A World: Rapunzel

This book shares the classic children's story of Rapunzel rewritten by Chole Perkins and illustrated by Archana Sreenivasan. In which the princess lets down her hair each day for the witch, that is until the prince comes along. When the witch finds out she punishes rapunzel and her prince, but true love always prevails. The difference of this story is the setting: India. This is a great book for showing diversity in classic children's stories. I rated the text complexity as Moderately complex as the text is heavily reliant on the illustrations.
Can buy here.

This book is one of many in the Cat in the Hat's reading library. The Cat in the Hat takes Sally and her brother (whose name I could not find even after some intense googling) on a trip through the solar system. They learn all of the planets as well as about stars and the moon. I rated this book as Very Complex as the use of graphics heavily supports the text, and the book has some abstract components such as a talking cat.
Can buy here.

I loved this book! It follows Norman from the day he got his wings. He hid them from his parents at first, due to him being fearful they would send him away for being different. However, he learns to embrace his wings instead of hiding them, and through his example more children came out and shared their wings with the world. I would rate this book as Exceedingly Complex, as having wings is not something that students can achieve in reality. I also gave it this rating as the idea of being different can mean more then having wings like the book, it could be race, sexuality, hair color etc.
Can buy here.

The illustrations in this book are gorgeous! The book tells the tale of slaves in Louisiana. It gives the activities they would do on each day, along with a countdown to Sunday in which they were free to go interact with each other in Congo Square. I rated this as Very Complex as the material would need prior teaching for the students to connect to and fully understand.
Can buy here.

This is perfect for the little mermaids and mermen in your class! The book follows Molly's first day of mermaid school! We see each activity as the day goes a long and boy does it look like a blast! I rated this book as Exceedingly complex as the vocabulary can sometimes be complex. There would need to be some stopping and explaining what a word means to student while the story is being read. It also does not have much of a real world connection sadly.
Can buy here.

What an amazing book!
This story highlights all of the diverse people living in Australia. Each has there own back story as well as reasons why they came to Australia. This is a great book to facilitate a discussion in your classroom about immigration as well as could serve as a great precursor to a project about where each of YOUR students come from! I rated it Moderately complex as some of the words used are Australian slang, which would need some explanation to students from other countries.
Can buy here.

This book is about Steve the horse, who always wins the annual race-a-thon. This year however the rules change and Steve is on a team with duck, snail and turtle. He coaches each of them to help them get faster. During the race it works and Steve's team is winning! However Steve isn't paying attention so when it comes to his turn he lets everyone past him and they end up losing. The teammates aren't sad, because that's the fastest they've ever gone! Steve even throws in a photobomb at the end. I rated this book as very complex, as even though the book does a good job of describing its complex vocabulary, the text is all over the place! If you didn't know where to start, you would struggle a little with this book.
Can buy here.

This book is about little owl and his first winter! He doesn't understand at first why all of his friends are going to sleep and why the forest is empty. But he finds others to play with as well as learns about snow! While he longs for spring again he decides to enjoy his time with winter! I rated this as slightly complex as the text was very easy to read. The illustrations do highly support the text, and some knowledge of nature would be required.
Can buy here.

This book has some blunt language, that younger children might make a fuss about. Overall however its a cute book about two children who go on a grand expedition in the backyard! They gather all of their supplies together and set off on their expedition. I rated this a slightly complex as there is no need for support from the illustrations. They are gorgeous and do add to the book but if you took them away, the text is still readable. Some of the words might need explaining but it depends on the age group it is for.
Can buy here.

this book is about a boy and his unique pet elephant. The bond between them is incredible and to him, his elephant would be like a dog to us. However the problem is not all places accept elephants, as they are different. The story follows his solution to people saying no elephants allowed.
I rated this as slightly complex as the text is simple and the illustrations are a great support. However it would be a complex idea to discuss with a class as elephants are not allowed as pets and students would not be able to make that connection.
Can buy here.

This book is about a big friendly umbrella. Whenever it rains, it is taken out from by the door and used to cover anyone and everyone. It is a great way for the users to make friends and stay dry from the rain! The umbrella protects them wherever they go.
I rated this as slightly complex and the text is simple per page. The illustrations are beautifully done in water color and are great supports!
Can buy here.

I love, love, love, love, love this book! Using only pictures, the authors tell the story of Vanessa who moves to a new school. As can happen to any new kid she is the target of bullying. Until a student steps up and befriends Vanessa. She walks home with her every day as well as sticking by her in school. I rated this book as moderately complex as it does not use text! While the message of the book is strong, students imaginations are free to create the story themselves which can lead to lots of variation!
Can buy here.

This is a beautiful book about a town coming together to play a pick up game of soccer. Even with a storm coming in, everyone stays and plays. At the end the sister and her brother go home for a relaxing bath, content. I would rate this as moderately complex as while the text is simple, it does involve Spanish words which depending on the classroom and population would need explaining.
Can buy here.

This is a story about Ibb, who passes by the very last castle every day. While those around the town are too scared to approach, Ibb takes the first step. Curiosity gets the best of her and she approaches the castle to learn its secrets! I rated this book as slightly complex as the text is predictable and flows easily. The illustrations support it quite well!
Can buy here.

The Wall in the Middle of The Book

This is a super cute storyb, that quite literally does have a wall in the middle of the book. It separates the pages from each other. One page has a knight on it while the other has multiple wild animals. While the wall keeps them separate each wants to climb to the top to see what is on the other side. I rated this book as slightly complex as the text is predictable and simple. The illustrations do a great job to support the text as the pages with animals do not have text on them.
Can buy here.
