Quote 1 "Involuntarily I glanced seaward - and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock." (21).

This quote is at the end of chapter 1 when Nick is on his way home. Nick looks at his neighbors dock and sees Gatsby reaching out to the sea. When he looks for what he is reaching for he sees the green light. The green light is a reoccurring symbol in the story that first appears here. The Green Light is a representation of multiple themes in the story. The Green Light is very significant to Gatsby representing all that he hopes to achieve.

When Daisy came to Gatsby's house, Gatsby told her about the Green Light and mentioned that he looks at it. Gatsby also said that Daisy's house is right across. This tells us that the Green Light symbolizes Gatsby's dream since he wants to get Daisy back. The Green Light represents hope.
