Product placement is when a brand pays for their product to be in a form of media to gain exposure and garner greater sales. It is very effective because when done correctly the audience will barely notice and it becomes almost like subliminal messaging. It works and worms into viewers minds making them want it when they don't even realize why.

In space jam (The better one) there is a real quick scene where a bunch of brands that Michael Jordan (the goat) associates with and does ads for get mentioned. While probably not a super effective actual advertisement but rather a comical poke at the products that Michael represents.

In Castaway staring Tom hanks FedEx was extremely prominent throughout the film. However there product placement deal didn't involve them having to pay but rather offer their services throughout the film. Giving insight into Fedex as a business along with ideas for how to really flesh out the company as a character rather than a product.
