1.) Take the SAT or ACT required by most colleges

2.) Search for and visit colleges you might wish to attend

3.) Take campus visits to learn more information about the college

4.) Begin applying for the colleges of your choice

5.) Successfully graduate High School with a degree and fulfilled course requirements

6.) Select college of your choice and apply for scholarships

**most collegiate coaching positions either require or prefer a Master's degree in Exercise Science or Education

2.) DEGREE FIELD - Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education in either a major or minor

3.)TEACHER'S CERTIFICATION -In most high school's and junior high's, especially in Texas, you are required to have a valid teacher's certificate in order coach and teach in the public school system.

4.) EXPERIENCE - For a public school system, preferable previous playing or coaching experience

**At college, preferable playing or coaching experience at the collegiate level

5.) SKILLS - sport's knowledge, communication skills with administration, players, parents, community, technology skills, ability to make quick decisions, ability to work as a team, ability to run and manage all aspects of a program

**at the collegiate level, coaches must be able to recruit

While that job description is accurate, it does not even paint the real picture as to the importance of coaching in our schools and our society. Coaching is one of the most profound jobs in the world. You get to spend each and every day working with athletes playing the sports we all love. Coaches are very important to the mental, physical, and social development of athletes at any level of play. Coaches, through the playing of sports, molds and shapes young athletes and prepares them for future situations that arise out in life.

Mike Buenting (2014) talks about four life lessons he believes a coach can teach:

1. A coach will teach you that success both in endurance sports and in life requires hard work. To achieve anything worthwhile, you have to put in hard work. You have to be dedicated and disciplined. To complete whatever endurance sport you choose to pursue if going to require a lot of hard work and the same goes for anything you want to achieve in life.  As they say you will get out what you put in.

In a culture where we expect to get rich, get paid, and do it right now, it is good to see that some people still do what they do because they have a love for it.  Most coaches are not in it for the money, but rather, the satisfaction and pleasure that comes from seeing athletes develop and accomplish things greater than they ever thought imaginable.

For each and every one of us, there will be times where things go completely awry. There will always be trying moments where we don’t perform to expectations and it’s how we cope with these moments and how your coach helps you cope with these moments that will allow you to grow and move on and become better.

As a coach I always help people dream big, dream often and chase crazy goals that they never would have thought they could reach. And they always reach and surpass those goals and limits that they had set for themselves. Most people are scared to push beyond a certain point, people are scared of failure. But as a coach I teach people to push beyond those limits and break down those walls and help them realize they can go farther and faster than they ever dreamed (Buenting, 2014)

What she accomplished at the University of Tennessee is the kind of consistent achievements under pressure that all teams—in sports and business—crave. She did all this across generations, including with today’s millennials who challenge traditional expectations of discipline and accountability. Summitt knew how to efficiently refocus energy to avoid the multiple distractions that suck momentum from teams (Fletcher, 2014).
