This is a book full of short stories, great for reading at the end of the day. In particular the story titled 'Sing Song Time'. I have photocopied the pages from this story and tip-exed out the children's names in the story and replaced them with the children's names in my current class. This was a BIG HIT with the children and I have them requesting the story that is "about their class" frequently and even asking to borrow the book to read in their free time. I cannot recommend doing this enough to encourage enjoyment for reading!

KS2 love having these books read to them as they get to choose how the story goes. It's a great way to get children who are usually less engaged during reading time to be actively involved and interested. Currently reading 'In The Jungle of Doom' to my year 4 class and I do a hands up vote - majority rules way of deciding where the story goes. It's really fun to see their ways of thinking about the story. If there's a split decision some children will put forward their reasonings for making a certain decision and some will react to these reasons by changing their vote 😂 so definitely an interesting and fun one to get the children involved.

Ask the class to bring in a book from home that they like best and add it to the corner for books to be read at the end of the day. Pick one at random, ask who brought it in and if they would like to read it out to the class or if they would like you to read it. Then have a question time at the end. Class mates may ask what they like about it, which part is their favourite and why.

Add some drama to your reading! Expression, volume and tone are all great BUT how about some body language? How about some dramatic reactions when the children are reading? Showing this kind of enthusiasm when a child is reading will really give them encouragement and pride in themselves. For children who do not have a joy for reading, it may really help them engage with the literature 👐 - don't worry about looking silly, the children will think you're great 😀

Dedicate a stall or rack at the library to an open book swapfrom home . Ask children to bring a book from home to share with others in their key stage or year group. Simplified - You give one, you get one. Children once putting one book in, can choose one book to borrow and read and return when finished.

Book Doctor 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️

Each week select a class 'Book Doctor' and allocate some time before quiet reading that other pupils can "Visit the Book Doctor". Maybe you can set up a chair amongst the books for the Book Doctor to sit on, pupils can then one at a time, speak to the Book Doctor about their "Symptoms" (what books they generally like, author preferences, what genre they would like to read next etc). Based off of this, the Book Doctor will the "perscribe" them a book to read. This gives children the enjoyment of recommending books, but also gives the children who are playing the role of "Book Patient" the opportunity to read books they may never have considered reading or even heard of before. There are many fun items that can be incorporated with this role - hat, apron, badge etc.

A story about YOUR class

Linked is a pdf file for a story you can turn into being about YOUR class. Print and tippex out the names in the story, grab your class register and fill in the names with all your class students. If there are too many names in your class, add some story in at the end so you can include everyone. I had to read this at least once a month to my class after doing this and so many of the pupils borrowed the book to re-read the story that was about them and that led to them reading other stories in the book. It even inspired some pupils to write their own stories! It was wonderful to see!

This is a fantastic opportunity for students, staff and parents to get involved with. I've done it that they're competing in their school houses, but this can be done any way, even individual in-class competitions. I also found a way to incorporate book doctor. Any more details needed on this - drop me a message.
