Look at how we make marks and patterns using different tools and processes!

This week, we also explored the writing, drawing, and carving tools at our writing center. We are starting to discover how different materials are used for specific purposes. We manipulated the clay, window washable marker, chalk, paint brushes using loose parts, a stamp paint brush, and some writing tools like colors, pens, and markers.

“How many kids do you see in our classroom?”

Circle Time is a time we get to know our teachers and classmates. We learn about their names and interests. It's fun to discover how similar we are to each other! We were also able to talk about numbers and letters through our calendar activities, weather reporting, and our exchange of conversations.

What do you mean by "provocation?"

This week, we set up a classroom that stimulated our minds to work on meaningful mark-making activities. We had an open-ended activity that didn't require an outcome; instead, it was designed to allow us to pursue and explore our own ideas. We also had the chance to talk about "marks" and how people make them. Our thoughts were translated through stamping, painting, and drawing, all mark-making opportunities.

We all had that question in mind. So, on a big paper, we allow ourselves to be creative and do something to pursue it. We stamped, painted, colored, drew, cut, crumpled, and scribbled. All ideas are welcome and we just let our hands be as creative as they can be.

It's wonderful to explore different tools that we know can create marks on our paper. It was interesting that we were more interested in unconventional painting tools to create different patterns. Some of those include loose parts, kitchenware, utensils, and different kinds of brushes.

This week, the TTH class work on counting skills through snakes and ladder games while the MWF class did practice reading such as CVC word exercises and sight word wheels.

How does the pattern of this tool appear in my paper?

This week, we delved into exploring different kinds of conventional and unconventional tools. We learned that each kind of painting and writing tool has different purposes and creates various strokes and patterns. They could also come in different sizes and shapes. We compared them to each other and were able to understand the degree of comparison (ex. big, bigger, biggest or small, medium, and large) based on the strokes we made.

Aside from that, we also notice how a single line could form a shape. It's also nice that we were able to design our tool depending on the pattern we like to create.

Last Friday we celebrated Father's Day at Playworks by inviting the dads and daddy figures to join us for the Daddylimpics. It was a day filled with relay race activities and salu-salo inside the classroom. It was great seeing our loved ones on this very special day.

Conventional tools: Paint brushes - how can I use them?

Since we were fascinated by how we can manipulate paintbrushes, we want to learn more about them. We noticed that different brushes create different strokes - from small to large, from thinner to fatter, and from big to biggest. We tried to understand how the painting tool we typically use to create art has different purposes depending on the intended outcome of an artwork. Some brushes should be used for smaller canvases while others should be used for bigger art walls or designs.

Outdoor activity with our chalk art mosaic

The kids played in the garden to explore the use of chalk since they were so interested in it. They tried chalk art mosaic activity but they especially enjoyed working on different ways to make marks. They even drew on the fences and tried making marks on the leaves.

Let's make our own tools!

We explored different loose parts that could make a mark. Instead of using a regular brush to create patterns and markings, we used cotton, paper, leaf, ornament, pompoms, toothbrush, fork, and stick. We were amazed at how these tools left a mark on the paper. We tried to rub, glide, push, tap, stamp, and roll the tools to see what their marks will look like.

I Love My New Toy! by Mo Willems

We gathered at the Active Play Area to listen to a story read by Teacher Nyra. The storybook is entitled "I Love My New Toy" by Mo Willems. It's a story about emotions, sharing, and learning the importance of friendship. Afterwards, we enjoyed making our own puppets of the characters in the story, Gerald and Piggie.

I can write on these materials. Do you want to try them?

This week, we discovered the different materials we could write on. We used the wooden chip and disc. Both materials had different textures and we noticed the differences between them. With the disc, we saw how the washable markers could easily glide on it since the texture is smooth. However, the markings were easily removed. On the other hand, the wooden chip is a little bumpy but the markings stayed there for a long time.

Last Friday, we discovered how materials like loose parts and other unconventional tools can be used to make marks. Some even used their body parts to create a pattern. It was an outdoor day with a lot of splattering, pounding, pressing, rolling, bouncing, and more!

How can I make marks on different things?

This week, we dug into discovering things we could use to leave a mark. We tried it on clothing, clay, oobleck, and even our bodies. We were able to answer our questions in mind such as, "How long does a mark stay on this thing?", "What does it look like if I mark this thing?"

Monday was a thought-provoking day!

Today's challenge was to compare how clay and oobleck can be mediums to make marks with. We noticed that when we press a cookie cutter on clay, the marks stay for a long time unless it is touched. On Oobleck, we noticed that it was completely the opposite. We observed that even if we pressed the cookie cutter hard on it, the markings disappear right away. It was very interesting for us to see how Oobleck can show the properties of both solids and liquids. If we poke or hit it hard with our fingers it becomes hard and stays in place. However, if we apply little force on it - like pouring it gently from a cup, it will flow like water.

What an "Aha!" moment for us!

There are many things around us that may seem impossible to make marks on - when in reality, the possibilities are endless! Today, we went outside, and we saw what we could do with some water, sand, and soil. We discovered that pressing certain objects on the sand and soil (especially when mixed with water) will leave an imprint on the surface! We tried using stamps, leaves, and even the bottoms of our shoes, which made for some very interesting patterns!

Hello apple! It's time to make marks on you.

How fun it is to make marks on apples. We used cookie cutters to see the shapes we can make. We also tried poking it with our forks and sticks, and we also tried slicing it with a knife. However, we thought that the best way was to make marks with our "sharp teeth" and also have a taste of it.

How can we make a mark on a plain white shirt?

Last Friday we had a DIY natural tie-dye shirt making. We enjoyed squirting the colored water and vinegar solution on our shirts. We saw how a plain white top was turned into a colorful one as we wrapped the shirt with rubber bands on different sides and angles and mixed the colors on other parts. Indeed, this activity sparked joy for us while we practiced how to develop our fine motor skills, visual motor skills, and hand-eye coordination.

How do our body parts and movements make a mark?

It's a week of mark-making using our body parts and movements. We've done a lot of things to prove that our bodies and movements create and leave an imprint everywhere. We danced to the beat of the music and painted with our body parts. We also discovered how different positions and movements create various mathematical figures like geometrical shapes and patterns, and learn about spatial awareness with spirograph art. It was also cool to try completing a body part art with our own body parts.

Investigate how simple everyday tasks leave a mark!

It's an exciting Monday as we discover that our body parts can make a mark as we move. Just by simply opening the door with wet hands, we can leave a hand print. So, we discover more about moving our body parts and see what the prints will look like. We've done it with painting, water, and powder. It was great to discover different kinds of patterns like dripping, flowing, spattering, etc.

You can stamp your feet, walk in tiptoes, slide, or glide. It's feet painting Tuesday!

As we dance along to the music that requires our feet to move in different ways, we noticed a lot of things. This includes the patterns, texture of the paint solution, and the effect of feet painting in a different medium like grass, paper, floor, and textile. We were also able to tap into the idea of force or effort that's made by our tiny feet as we press it in a different medium. We realized that there are times when we have to use our gentle feet as we glide or slide and there are also instances when we have to exert strength to see the foot pattern instead of just a whip or splatter.

We can use any part of our body to make marks!

We made sure to come in our swimsuits since we were about to paint with our bodies today — not just with our hands and feet, but with every part! To make this even more fun, we were told to make marks and move our bodies with the beat of bouncy music! We would lay on the paint, roll around on a huge piece of paper and see what kind of patterns we left. At the end of all that, we had so much fun with a hose as it sprayed us and washed us all down!

Today was messy, but so much fun!

How many ways can we measure?

This week, we delved into learning about measuring. We started learning about estimation. Estimation strategies are a window into our mathematical thinking and problem-solving. The acquisition of estimation has contributed to a mathematical understanding of numbers, measurement, and time for us. After this, we explored ways to measure using non-standard measuring tools like our body parts and even the toys around us. This has allowed us to see the importance of using standard measuring tools like tape measures, rulers, measuring cups, etc. which later on was taught to us.

Exploring our body movements activates our creativity and imagination as we form different lines, curves, figures, and patterns. Hand and arm movements are visible since these body parts are commonly used in writing or drawing. Besides that, we enjoyed various ways to maneuver our hands in drawing such as lying on the floor, bending our knees or even just sitting as we envision what we have in our creative minds. Today, we learned that repeated strokes and scribbles can form an art called "Spirography".

Last Friday, we completed the body part format using our bare hands instead of traditional brushes or tools. It seemed that we enjoyed using our different body parts not only our hands but also our arms and feet in painting. This activity allowed us to join forces as a group which was helpful for us as a team to complete the human body art. While exploring paint marks and engaging with the textures and sensations of the paint on our hands, we noticed how the movement of our body affects our output — mixing colors together, exploring finger/hand and body movements, and using our senses to create our own multicolored HUMAN BODY art.

It all depends on your force!

Sometimes we get disappointed when we can't produce a specific pattern in mind. This is because we either put in too much force or we don't exert enough. This week, we saw the relevance of producing the appropriate amount of force.

We learned that there are mark-making ideas that require a certain kind of effort. It may sometimes be slow, fast, light, or heavy, and we even tap on push-and-pull ideas.

The challenge for the day: Make our paint move!

It may look easy at 1st glance, but it's hard to blow through the mouth and force out our breath to make a pattern. Because of this, we decided to create different ways to move our paint. Some had to move the paper from left to right. Others tried to shake it in a slow and fast way. We also tapped the paper gently and hard just to see what it will look like.

Aside from that, we also had a chance to try moving the paint inside a box using a ping-pong ball and we were surprised at what it looked like.

We "chalked it up!"

We achieved something noteworthy today and we can say that we chalked up our activity. We also noticed some things that are worth discussing as a big group. It started when we picked up tools we can use to pound. We compared how these tools can break up the chalk. We saw some that were broken into small pieces, some were in chunks, and others turned into powder. With this, we realized how force is exerted and transferred into different mediums.

Aside from that, we enjoyed seeing the patterns made by the chalk. We also experimented with it with water and it turned into a paint-like solution which led us to color our craft paper.

In order for a child to become a reader, mastery of the letter sounds is important, so for this week, we met the "at" and "og" families and paired them with other letter sounds. We also discovered ways to blend and even do the phoneme addition and deletion. Plus, we get to spell out some CVC words just by listening to their sounds.

Grounds for Creativity: Painting with Coffee!

Today we explored the magic of coffee grounds! Not only did it mix in with water to create a liquid we could paint with, but it also left very interesting marks on our paper! The coffee grounds were so fun to dip our hands into, and they were even more fun to put into droppers. It was so interesting to see how the pressure we placed on the dropper made such a difference in how much coffee water came out, it really made us feel like artists!

Paint like Picasso

After brainstorming about the name of our museum, we also made our poster. We utilize conventional and unconventional tools for painting. Some used their hands, others wrote on the paper and there were students who also tried putting different cut papers. It was nice to see how our ideas were put into one frame.

Pendulum Art: Swing A String

Last Friday, we had a great day playing and swinging the string as we called the pendulum that goes side-by-side or back and forth to create sand art. We used plastic bottles to hold the sand and detach it through swings and shakes. We really enjoyed how the pendulum goes in different directions as we put light and potent force on it. Also, it opens the door for us to take turns and develop a sense of connectedness while swinging the pendulum.

The Era of Ancient: An Interactive Museum

Our class presents "The Era of Ancient," where we showcase all our artwork in a museum-like classroom. We transformed our class into an interactive museum and it also houses our artworks from previous explorations. We also had fun making our posters and inviting our loved ones is the most special part.
