For this assignment I chose the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Looking at their 2017-18 season, for a majority of their concerts they're playing music by composers apart of the western canon, such as Beethoven, Mozart, Saint-Saëns, etc.

I didn't see very many pieces by contemporary composers such as Adam Schoenberg, Michael Daugherty, etc. Contemporary music is largely almost ignored by professional orchestras, so it seems.

How does the group innovate?

Every season the ASO does popular concerts, such as film scores in concert, Disney in concert, children's Halloween concerts, and of course The Nutcracker. Playing popular pieces in which everyone can relate to and have fun and enjoy is a great way to innovate the orchestral setting. All of these kinds of performances seem to be outside of the canon.

What I Would Like To See Performed

I would really love more contemporary composers and new composers to be given a shot in orchestral concert halls. I'm a huge wind band fan, and almost all band music is contemporary because wind bands are a relatively new thing. My favorite composer, John Mackey, is a wind band composer. But I would love to see composers like Adam Schoenberg, whose work Picture Studies for symphony orchestra, remains one of my all time favorites.

Where Am I in the Music?

I don't think I'd see myself in this music. While I do love some older classical music, it isn't my favorite kind. Personally, contemporary composers and contemporary music has evoked more emotion for me. For example, this past February at the TMEA convention in San Antonio, I got to hear the TMEA All-State Symphonic Band play John Mackey's Wine-Dark Sea, one of my absolute favorite pieces for wind band. The performance was absolutely phenomenal and had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. That's the kind of music I see myself in.
