Playing popular pieces in which everyone can relate to and have fun and enjoy is a great way to innovate the orchestral setting. I'm a huge wind band fan, and almost all band music is contemporary because wind bands are a relatively new thing. My favorite composer, John Mackey, is a wind band composer. But I would love to see composers like Adam Schoenberg, whose work Picture Studies for symphony orchestra, remains one of my all time favorites.

While I do love some older classical music, it isn't my favorite kind. Personally, contemporary composers and contemporary music has evoked more emotion for me. For example, this past February at the TMEA convention in San Antonio, I got to hear the TMEA All-State Symphonic Band play John Mackey's Wine-Dark Sea, one of my absolute favorite pieces for wind band. The performance was absolutely phenomenal and had me at the edge of my seat the entire time.
