Stimulus: Djembe

Joe – Bass, Joel – Drums, Will – Lead Guitar, Meg – Vocals, Cate – Rhythm Guitar, Morgan - Keys

In response to the stimulus, we created a song inspired by Reggae. Our initial thoughts, while observing the stimulus, was to create an African-style song, due to the traditional African nature of the stimulus; however, as we began analysing the instrument into more depth, we took notice of the hollow structure of Djembe and the intense sound it made as we hit it. We, therefore, connected it to the sound of a heartbeat – resorting in Joe creating lyrics relating to love and heartbreak (“Can you feel my heart beating?
And you know what I’m feeling…”). The feedback received was rather positive, the class appeared to like our close connection to the culture of the stimulus.

The chords were essentially improvised; however, efforts were made to ensure we created an up-beat song structure, to contrast against the strong lyrics – relating to the song structure of typical Reggae songs.

Shaan and Caitlin – Vocals, Nathan – Rhythm Guitar, Adam – Bass, Morgan – Keys, Cate – Lead Guitar

In response to this week’s stimulus, Shaan created lyrics relating to a ‘Heavy Load’ (the name of the song we created) the woman in the image was, perhaps, dealing with at the time. This was due to the comic strip appearing to show a woman in a car being followed, alone, by a mysterious person in a detached lorry. The woman appeared to look back at the vehicle in dismay as she realised she was being followed; therefore we collaborated our ideas and created lyrics to fit (Shaan in particular).

Chorus -
“Your heavy load. Your heavy load.
That won’t let go. That won’t let go.”

From this we decided to create a mellow instrumental background that didn’t overpower the lyrics, due to the lyrics being written based on a distressing subject; therefore, developing our ideas, we created a Blues-style song.

Shaan and Leah – Vocals, Adam – Bass, Dom – Keys, Cate – Guitar

Despite the colourful imagery of this week’s stimulus we decided to create a song that contrasted against its vibrancy. We noticed there was the colourful figure of a rather wealthy man in the image – appearing to be alone, unlike the rest of the people in the background; this lead us to creating a song related to the wealth and ‘happiness’ of the male figure. The genre was intentionally aimed to be quite up-beat; however we resorted in creating a simple chord structure to prevent the lyrics from becoming unheard.
