Nestled between the sea and the slopes of Aspromonte, Costa Viola is characterised by its high and jagged coastlines, wide beaches and coves as well as numerous picturesque caves From any given point you can admire wonderful views over Sicily and, in particular, the Aeolian Islands and the volcanoes of Stromboli and Etna. The coastal road winds across slopes carpeted with Mediterranean scrub however some areas can only be reached by foot along pathways.

The sea is deep and the clear waters contain numerous remains that bear witness to the centuries-old history of the ancient civilizations that passed through Calabria or settled there. The seabeds of Cavaianculla, Pietrosa, Chianiti, Pietragalera and Capo Barbi still contain and protect treasures of great archaeological and natural value.

In the north, the Costa Viola begins in Palmi, a modern town dominated by the imposing Mount Sant'Elia, which marks the beginning of the typical landscape composed of rugged hills overlooking the sea.
In addition to the golden beaches of Tonnara, Pietrenere and Scinà, the extensive coast is home to enchanting coves and a wonderful seabed that is very popular among divers. Must-visit attractions include Taureana, with its 4th-century early Christian crypt, and the small church of San Fantino, the first saint of Calabria. Adventure lovers will enjoy exploring the Neolithic caves of the grandiose Byzantine-Monastic cave settlement of Tarditi which is closely related to myths, legends and tales of buried treasures.

In the centre of the Costa Viola, at the base of a wide bay nestled between the hills overlooking the sea, you will find Bagnara Calabra. Arranged like an ancient amphitheatre among the vineyards, it can be seen reflected in the waters of the lower Tyrrhenian. From Bagnara Calabra, you can admire breath-taking views extending from Capo Vaticano in the north to the cliff of Scilla in the south.
In a sea coloured purple by the reflections of the sun and the rocks, the caves known as Grotta del Monaco and the Grotta delle Rondini are the perfect places for fascinating boat trips.
 Bagnara is also known as the home of nougat, one of the most popular Calabrian sweets in the world which is still manufactured using the ancient techniques of the first artisanal nougat factories.

Further south is the cliff of Scilla, a monumental town perched on a rocky spur dominated by Ruffo castle. This mythical town recalls the legend of the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis which was sung by Homer in the Odyssey and is also one of the most famous tourist centres in Calabria.
In the tip of the boot’s toe, the coast reveals unexpected surprises with beaches alternating between sand, gravel and rock, lapped by a deep, open sea. Amidst breath-taking and romantic scenery, Scilla is one of the most characteristic villages in Italy, thanks to its castle perched on the promontory, the colourful houses leaning against each other and the Strait overlooking Sicily. The village of Chianalea, often referred to as the Venice of the South on account of its characteristic alleys that end in the sea, should be on every tourist’s must-visit list.

Its noteworthy political past includes turn-of-the-15th-century battles associated with the Italian Wars and a 1535 visit by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who entered Seminara in a triumphal cortege to celebrate his victory over the Ottomans in Tunis.
Historically, the town has also had a reputation for its fine olive oil and silk. 
Its two most distinguished citizens reflect southern Calabria’s Greek heritage, which endured long past the periods of Greater Greece and the Early Middle Ages when Orthodox Churches were established throughout the territory. Barlaam of Seminara (1290-1348) was an influential Byzantine-Greek clergyman and philosopher, and Leonzio Pilato (died 1364) was the first to translate Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey into Latin.
Seminara has a long history of terracotta production. Decorative pieces are finished with vibrant colors derived from natural sources. Traditionally, green, yellow and blue are the dominant colors. Characterized by original forms, bizarre faces and extremely lively colors, Seminara ceramics are imaginative, folkloristic creations full of story, hidden meaning and even magical powers
