Thunderstorms then create tornadoes when the hot air rises up to the cool air in the clouds. In the first 9 days of May, over a 40 year span, there were 2466 tornadoes. These number continue to increase up until the middle of June, where we see a rapid decrease in numbers, dropping off by 200-300/9 days.
