Tweet up at CGEA 2017 when Karen created her Twitter account @KMarcdante. We had a lot of fun! I miss you, Karen. Your caring, love, humanity, and warmth for medical education will stay in many people's hearts forever. Heeyoung

Love this photo as 2 amazing CGEA members - each of whom has made amazing contributions to med ed and to each of us in the CGEA.

The Ta Da factor!!

2024-03-25 16:34:49 UTC

Early in working with Karen she said need 'showcase' work in a way that is connects with people. Puzzled - she gave a non-verbal" to go with the verbal "Ta Da" factor (emphasize on Daaaaa). It became a shorthand when something I was exploring with her was lacking. She'd just put her hands up and give me a look... if you ever got "the look" you will know it (and her family said they know too)! -- Deb Simpson

Karen was one of the first medical educators I met at my first CGEA meeting. We had a tight bond as we were both pediatric medical educators. She has been an advisor, mentor, friend, and most of all...a laughing partner. When we were at the AAMC she told me she felt like a proud mother knowing I was receiving this award. Needless to say...I started tearing up immediately. ~Gary Beck Dallaghan

Future forward thinking while always being in the present with others. This is at one of the "educator of the future" sessions in which we had a lot of fun ---the joy of learning and being with our MedEd Family!

Karen to the Kern Institute "Go Big or Go Home"!

2024-03-29 13:59:01 UTC

KM became my "guiding light" and "senior scientist of Mattering" from the first day I met her in September of 2019 when I became the Director of the Robert D and Patricia E Kern Institute for the Transformation of Medical Education at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She told me, in the most loving way possible to "Go Big or Go Home!"- I tried every day to heed her advice. The link above is to a series of essays Karen wrote for our Transformational Times on transforming medical education. Even though I only knew her for a few short years I miss her very much. I know she would have had something inspiring to say about my current situation. I know she would have been proud of the many of us she touched and influenced.- Adina Kalet

THANK YOU, KAREN!

Empathy

The last time I saw Karen she gave me a hug to recognize my father recently died

Always available

I didn't get to work with Karen. But several times, usually at conferences, I would approach Karen about a project idea or a conundrum I was struggling with. Karen always availed herself and the breadth and depth of her knowledge to me, and I've no doubt she did the same for others! Our community will miss her!

Mattering Meeting

2024-04-05 17:17:24 UTC

A few months before her death, I reached out to Karen for assistance with a “Mattering” project. She quickly scheduled a meeting with me and several other of her colleagues to help. She was incredibly selfless with her time, even while battling for her life. I am so deeply appreciative- Karen, you will be missed.

Karen served as an amazing mentor, coach, and sponsor as leader and role model. Her spirit will be sorely missed…and celebrated by those she prepared to carry on.

Karen was that person who encouraged you to reach for bigger things, to expand your knowledge, skills, and capabilities, she never judged you by the title or degree. You were a person who had a place at her table. She was a driving source of collaboration and helping to support others learn and grow. Thank you for being that person to so many of us. Your legacy lives beyond this Padlet. You will always be in our hearts and in the work we do! ~Carrie Bowler
