         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sir Isaac Newton was an English mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who is recognised as one of the most important scientists of all time and a key figure in the scientific revolution.<br>Newton created the laws of motion and universal gravitation that dominated scientists' view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. Newton's <em>Principia</em> formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation that dominated scientists' view of the physical universe for the next three centuries. By deriving keeper's laws  ofplanetary motio from his mathematical description of gravity, and using the same principles to account for comets, the tides, the precision ofthe equinoxes, and other phenomena, Newton removed the last doubts about the validity of the heliocentric model of the solarsystem and demonstrated that the motion of objects on earth and of celestial bodies could be accounted for by the same principles. Newton's theoretical prediction that the Earth is shaped as an oblate spheroid as later vindicated by the geodetic measurements of maupertuis, la Condamine.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Robert Hooke is known as a "Renaissance Man" of 17th century England for his work in the sciences, which covered topics such as astronomy, physics and biology.Robert Hooke was born in the town of Freshwater, on England’s Isle of Wight, on July 18, 1635. His parents were John Hooke, who served as curate for the local church parish, and Cecily  Hooke.<br><br></div><div>Initially a sickly child, Hooke grew to be a quick learner who was interested in painting and adept at making mechanical toys and models. After his father’s death in 1648, the 13-year-old Hooke was sent to London to apprentice with painter Peter Lely. This connection turned out to be a short one, and he went instead to study at London’s Westminster School.<br><br></div><div>In 1653, Hooke enrolled at Oxford's Christ Church College, where he supplemented his meager funds by working as an assistant to the scientist Robert Boyle. While studying subjects ranging from astronomy to chemistry, Hooke also made influential friends, such as future architect Christopher Wren.<br>Hooke was held owner of experiments for the newly formed Royal Society of London in 1662, a position he obtained with Boyle's support. Hooke became a gentleman of the society in 1663.<br><br></div><div>Unlike many of the gentleman scientists he interacted with, Hooke required an income. In 1665, he accepted a position as professor of geometry at Gresham College in London. After the "Great Fire" destroyed much of London in 1666, Hooke became a city surveyor. Working with Wren, he assessed the damage and redesigned many of London’s streets and public buildings.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Galileo Galilei&nbsp;</div><div>In 1583, Galileo entered the University of Pisa to study medicine. Armed with high intelligence and talent, he soon became fascinated with many subjects, particularly mathematics and physics. While at Pisa, Galileo was exposed to the Aristotelian view of the world, then the leading scientific authority and the only one sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church. At first, Galileo supported this view, like any other intellectual of his time, and was on track to be a university professor. However, due to financial difficulties, Galileo left the university in 1585 before earning his degree.Galileo continued to study mathematics, supporting himself with minor teaching positions. During this time he began his two-decade study on objects in motion and published <em>The Little Balance</em>, describing the hydrostatic principles of weighing small quantities, which brought him some fame. This gained him a teaching post at the University of Pisa, in 1589. There Galileo conducted his fabled experiments with falling objects and produced his manuscript <em>Du Motu</em> <em>(On Motion)</em>, a departure from Aristotelian views about motion and falling objects. Galileo developed an arrogance about his work, and his strident criticisms of Aristotle left him isolated among his colleagues. In 1592, his contract with the University of Pisa was not reviewed. In 1604, Galileo published <em>The Operations of the Geometrical and Military Compass</em>, revealing his skills with experiments and practical technological applications. He also constructed a hydrostatic balance for measuring small objects. These developments brought him additional income and more recognition. That same year, Galileo refined his theories on motion and falling objects, and developed the universal law of acceleration, which all objects in the universe obeyed. Galileo began to express openly his support of the Copernican theory that the earth and planets revolved around the sun. This challenged the doctrine of Aristotle and the established order set by the Catholic Church.</div>]]></description>
