A comprehensive school counseling program is essential because it ensures all students have the knowledge, skills, mindsets, and beliefs to become successful learners and responsible citizens. 

The school counseling scope of practice is important because it focuses on all aspects of a student's educational, physical, and mental well-being.  

The domain of academic development is important because it sets individualized strategies, skills, and goals to ensure every student reaches their highest academic potential.  

The domain of career development is important because it provides individualized career exploration and planning by identifying the strengths and interests of every student. Career development also assists students make the transition to postsecondary education if they choose.  

Social/emotional development is important because it provides a safe school environment to learn about mental health and can provide crisis intervention and referrals for students needing support services. Also, skills are taught for establishing and maintaining positive relationships, coping, and stress.  

School counselors must understand the relationship between mindsets, behaviors, and student outcomes. Ensuring student success is not determined solely by knowledge of school core content; they must have the appropriate beliefs within themselves to demonstrate behaviors in learning strategies, self-management skills, and social skills. 

The ASCA Ethical standards are important because they provide guidelines for responsibility to students, parents/guardians, school, colleagues, and self. 

Professional standards and competencies of ASCA school counselors are important because they ensure a positive mindset about student achievement and success. These mindsets guide counselor behavior, including a professional foundation, direct and indirect student services, planning, and assessment.  

Direct Services are important to school counseling as they allow the teaching of behavior and mindset for student success. It also allows individualized student planning, services, counseling, and intervention.  

Indirect services are important as they allow students' needs to be met and improve student outcomes by targeting specific needs, improving academic support, increasing access to resources, and cultivating a positive school culture.
