Mengfu was considered a "traditionalist", or a person that was almost entirely dissatisfied with the Mongols and how they ruled their country. When the Mongols took control of China, their ideas and culture was forced upon all people in the region to the dismay of almost all of the Chinese population. Many artists during this time painted with the image of their old country firmly in their minds. He very easily could've made it into official dynasty service but chose not to. Zhen's work actually fell quite under the radar at the time of him creating it but was given the title of one of the four great masters in future dynasties. The work above, titled "Fishermen", captures a lot of his signature style and beliefs that he had. Much of his work incorporates fishing and the ideas of escapism. Zhen used fishing as a way to capture the desire to escape from society and to have a worry-free life. His story is interesting, as even when he was young, his paintings were impressing people and causing others to become jealous towards him. He was close to being able to serve within the court of the Ming Dynasty, but it is theorized that he lost his chance at that because some of the other painters at the Ming Dynasty palace were so jealous of him that they created false accusations against him so that they wouldn't have to work with him. His work continued to catch eyes and allowed him to earn a living by selling them. Later on, fans of his work started to resent the Ming court due to him losing his spot in it and he eventually worked to found the Zhe school.
