Topic 1: What science is and how it works

*Before my journey with the NS100 Science course, I thought of science as exploration, experiments, and data. As a mom sometimes I think of it as a mess.
*My thinking has changed because I now think of science as questions that need answers. My view of what science is has changed because of the Natural Selections Lab. This lab could have been confusing if I didn't start to ask myself questions. I broke down the process of the lab by questioning the smaller aspects to be able to accomplish the main mission.
*When this course comes to an end I will continue to take on new and unknown tasks with the scientific inquiry in mind, questioning steps in learning not just for an end goal but to learn and build upon my knowledge.

Topic 2: How the scientific method relates to scientific inquiry and how inquiry-based learning impacts student learning

*Prior to this course, all I knew of the scientific method was that it was a process to a result and I thought that scientific inquiry was a question for someone else to answer. I did not know that inquiry-based learning was a method used in classes.
*During my observation of a 5th-grade science class, my view has changed about how scientific inquiry and scientific methods relate to each other. I can see how it is vital to use the inquiry method to begin discussions in the class and through the scientific method students can reach their conclusions while being guided through topics.
*Once NS100 comes to an end I will continue to use scientific inquiry and scientific method even with students through reading. I want to develop the skill of questioning with purpose and analyzing the content for answers.

Topic 3: The characteristics of life and what it means to be alive

*I feel that life and creation are all connectively formed through a greater power and spirit. Many parts of life and its varieties are unlimited. I know that many things in life share characteristics. Even the type of technology we use has characteristics that can be found in life and creation.
*Through the process of exploring this course I still firmly believe in life from a great creator. I see more variety now through the scientific research done when I viewed the genetic adaptations part of this course. It was amazing to see that what I think of as normal, such as lactose persistence, is a genetic mutation of adaptation to natural selection.
*I will continue to explore the variety of people and how people have adapted to their environmental conditions. This is something we can share with our students because we have many students that come from different backgrounds and when you have known one thing all of your life, you don't think about the differences. What we may think is normal for us may not be normal for someone else.

Topic 4: How microscopic changes have macroscopic effects

*My understanding of microscopic, before reviewing our NS100 coursework, was being able to view something on a small level with a microscope that I couldn't see with my own eyes. I had not heard of macroscopic before our science class.
*I now see microscopic change with macroscopic effects more easily. In a review of the resource video Natural Selection and The Rock Pocket Mouse, it is amazing to see how something so small molecularly, like the DNA of the rock pocket mouse, can change and have a more macro effect on the physical features of the animal. This then protects it from its environmental conditions. Which is a big aspect to preserve its species for the future generation.
*Keeping microscopic changes and macroscopic effects in mind while in the classroom will help me to remember that small changes have big effects. Even if the big picture or data does not show it yet it does not mean it's not happening.

Topic 5: How your scientific perspective has changed since the beginning of the semester

*My scientific perspective before NS100 was just based on chemical reactions and experiments to make science fun for kids.
* Through this course and being able to observe a science classroom I can see how vital it is to ask questions. Asking questions opens up the class environment to allow the student to show us what they know while seeking answers for observations.
*I will continue to use the inquiry method to have students decode their knowledge about reading and how they read. To allow them to make their observations about their skills and how they can develop as readers and thinkers.

*Before NS100 I did not think science would relate at all to what I do in the classroom with reading.
*My perspective of science has changed completely during the NS 100 course. I look at my experiences more as an observation of what the students can do and not as right or wrong.
*I am continuing to learn about the science of reading and using the scientific inquiry technique to help me to better understand how to teach the students.
