Upon coming to the classroom, the children go to their house/colour groups and sit in a fine-motor activity for approximately 15-20 minutes -- just before morning Circle Time. Daily rotations around the activities ensure equal opportunities and experience for all children.

In photo: Developing hand control and eye-hand coordination with tweezers and pompoms.

Behaviour Management tool - Colour ladder

We use the colour ladder as a reward and consequence tool for our class. Everyone begins on the green colour at the beginning of the day. Children who strive to make ‘good choices’ through the day are rewarded by moving their names up to blue. More ‘good choices’ lead up to the top colour — purple, which merits a reward e.g. a sticker at the end of the day.

Undesirable behaviour is called a ‘poor choice’ and children are given chances and warnings before their names are moved down to yellow and red. Children whose names are moved down have the chance to make better choices to move their names up back to green or even up the ladder! 😊

We made some playdough from scratch in one of our learning areas; and used some natural materials such as twigs, coffee beans, and herbs to enhance.

The children loved having the ownership of their activity — making the playdough and experimenting ways on how to achieve the texture that’s ‘just right’. Having a white and plain based playdough was a helpful decision as it enabled them to be more imaginative and resourceful with what they can do with it. Lots of sensory play from the natural resources too!

The whiteboard pens have been popular recently and so we thought of another way it could be used and to encourage more children to visit the mark-making area.

We used some clear decal to wrap around a table’s legs and tipped it over to bring a different kind of ‘writing board’. So far the children love it and they really enjoy the idea of seeing and comparing different marks with their friends. Lots of mark-making, fine-motor, and talking going on. 👩🏻‍🏫
