I am finishing up my final semester at Westminster College with a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood (PreK-4) and Special Education (PreK-8). I am from Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania located right outside of Pittsburgh. I stayed at Westminster for a ninth semester because I picked up a music minor during my sophomore year with a focus in violin and percussion.

During my time at Westminster, I was very fortunate to have many varied, enriching experiences in the field of education. Diving into different educational settings has been a joy. I am excited to enter the professional world and serve others in any way I can.

Integrated unit

I love science and social studies. Experiments, explorations, and research can be such rich experiences for children at all ages, and these subjects are focused on less. There is so much pressure to push students in ELA and math, so science and social studies are naturally put on the back burner. I believe that these subjects are essential for molding young minds into future responsible citizens of the world.

I created an integrated science unit on autumn during my student teaching placement in kindergarten. I designed the unit to be brief but engaging, and flexible enough to be implemented into a tightly packed schedule. Teaching this unit was enjoyable for the students and for myself, and I learned how to incorporate science and social studies into a curriculum without much leeway. I wanted to give my students an opportunity to expand their expressive language, so I found that it would be most appropriate to include an oral interview as the summative assessment.

I met some amazing students with diverse abilities and needs. The experience was very powerful, and I absolutely loved every minute of it. This lesson plan in particular is an example of what differentiation looks like in this low incidence setting.

Here is an example of a social story I wrote for a student who needed some guidance in the cafeteria.

Inclusion in a 4th grade ELA lesson

In my experience at Sharpsville Elementary in a departmentalized 4th grade ELA classroom, I fell in love with the curriculum. 4th grade language arts was so fun to teach - the students dive into such meaningful content, and they really start to pick apart texts and think about the bigger picture. I was so inspired by the way my cooperating teacher taught the concept of theme. I wrote this lesson plan for an assignment in which we had to accommodate for students identified with different needs. When considering students in my class with unique learning characteristics, it is imperative that I design the lesson with their needs in mind, and not as an afterthought.
