I know that lots of pupils like computer games, but none of them are playing a math game. I would give some homework that would involve technology. I have students of different levels, so I use a simple language and give a lot of examples, to attract all of them(some examples are easier to understand, and others need some thinking to be done). So, when I am planning my lesson I try to take into consideration there level of understanding and to come up withappealing examples.

Their experience with the games truly represents tremendous potential with math but alas connects curricular mathematics holds the two distinct worlds (extrascolastico- school) with clear and distinct impact. I deal mostly of school projects that involve students in my class and when I propose their rebus, crciverba, logic games with different degrees of difficulty (anchhe of Bortolato line) see them that perplexed pose questions and seek solutions and then spot the smile on their face.

"What kind of activities do they like?", Do I have the resources I will need?" and "how do I take all these aspects into account in lesson planning?".

At the beginning, I try diferent strategies to learn and understand their learning modes and what do they like.

I have the advantage of working for five years with the same students (6-10 years old). The difficulty is when we begin a new cycle, then time is required to know the level of understanding and interests, aptitudes of each child. It is also a big difference between generations differentiated by five years. In the first class we have many activities for knowledge through games I test students to show what they know, what they want to know, what and how they like to learn. I test them patience, attention, imagination, creativity. I make an inventory of resources: computers, tablets, games, software and more. Unfortunately, our resources are quite limited, lessons working with printed material, computer and software but are used more for demonstrations and presentations, students had limited access, less individualized. Current textbooks have attached a CD with educational games that they use individual home, some of them bring tablets to school, but rarely use them.

In these last years, I'm trying to change my teaching by reading articles, attending courses and surfing the net (ted lesson, dan meyer, desmos and so on...). I have to admit that is a very hard work, it isn't easy to change my mindset. So I use a lot of different strategies - perhaps I'm quite confusing - like youtube videos (I love Ted lessons), hand-made videos, Geogebra, Desmos, group work, problems from real life, math and History (with the collaboration of the other teachers..) and so on. Sometimes it works and sometimes doesn't really works: one day my students are engaged and they really make effort to find a solution to a challenging question but another day they are frustrated and they tell me: "Why you don't you give us the answer!!!". I'm already the "answer key" and when I refuse to give them the answer they feel disappointed and I really annoy them. What really works: a debate, they like telling me the reasons for a question but there are also students that don't have the time to struggle with the question because their mates are faster. What never works: leave them alone to struggle a problem, they feel abandoned and they don't be used to be out of their comfort zones. I have to improve this point.

Life in Carrara is based on the extraction and processing of marble. My school is located in a depressed area with a high unemployment rate and immigration (first and second generation). My students like when they have to build and explore something. It’s difficult for them to manage problems/exercises with long text or explanation. Italian is a difficult language with many subordinate clauses, pronouns.... today's students are not patients, they do not control if they really understood the text. They simply trust their intuition about the meaning. I’ve tried to avoid this attitude using problems/exercises with figures-cartoons (in particular if the context is about real life)and using problems/exercises where the explanations are in English

It is a learning environment for me as much as them as this has brought new situations and dynamics.
They are low achievers and their syllabus is easier than the main stream. Unless they improve they will not be able to sit for the national 16+ exams. They find problem sums very hard and some struggle with basic English. Even simple addition and multiplication problems are a can be a struggle. I like to have them work in groups and let them explain to each other what they have understood. I try to involve them in a discussion and let them bring up ideas on how these concepts can be used in everyday life. I have to do a lot of repetition and enforce a learning habits like writing neatly, showing the working, keeping good record of their work in order for them to understand what they have done. I try to use small games and activities on the computer but i find that it takes them long to settle down and very often we run out of time.

I teach students from 12 to 15 years old in a public school in a rural town. I find a variety of students with
different skill levels and sometimes coming from disadvantaged families.

My school has access to Internet in almost all classrooms but we have only a computer in there. There is classroom with 15 computers than also can be used.
In the classroom I try to use some interactive resources as Geogebra and applications that our textbook provides. I also try to present to students videos and webpages that can help then in their study at home and also I provide some material by mail or Google Docs. But I feel some difficulties because we have an extensive curriculum e few time to work with classes. The topics that students are most interested are Arithmetic, geometric constructions and obviously Data and statistics (because it´s easy, they say). Algebra is always a problem. Students like practical activities but sometimes they simply want a “quick answer” and fast way to solve the situation. What always work? What never works? It´s not easy to answer and it changes according to the group of students we have in the classroom. I guess games and computer applications (and currently smartphones applications), almost always work, but it´s not easy to make them understand the Maths they are seeing.

In my school there are a lot of computers and a good internet connection so we can use internet to integrate lessons. Evey classroom have an interactive blackboard too so.. we are lucky! Students like computers, but teachers must always oversee activities, because students try to play with computer. In free time I allow games, but only logical game, for didactics consistency. IT tools are an opportunity, but they become, without the right control, distractors.

I'm a teacher of a secondary school, my students are at the age of 13-14.
Personalized teaching is difficult in classrooms with 15-20 students. We don’t have wi-fi connection in our classrooms and students are not allowed to bring cellphones or tablets at school. Also, there is only one computer classroom in our school that has less than 10 computers that are actually functional. So, if a teacher wants to do a lesson in the computer classroom, it has to be very well organized and planned. I haven’t done any of that yet, but I plan on doing it this year.

However, personalized teaching can be done without the use of technology, simply by using work sheets. This way, each student works on its own pace and gets the help they want to finish the sheet. I used them last year a few times with very good results. Students that are very weak at math started to work and students that are very noisy suddenly focused and they also started to work. I simply add a few difficult exercises at the end for the best ones to deal with, if they finish the work sheet very quickly.

At the beginning of the school year I give my students a questionnaire on «Ηοw do I learn Maths best” followed by an overall discusion. A large percentage of students prefer digital technologies for learning. Undoubtedly the games have many advantages: Students experiment through trial and error, follow their own personal pace and get immediate feedback.
I have access to many softwares or digital games but unfortunately, most of them require knowledge of English language. And finally as a digital immigrant I feel completely ignorant in front of my students who are more aware on technology.

My students have between 12 to 15 years old. I teach in a public primary school in a rural village.

My students have different skill levels. We have access to internet around our school.

In my class, I often use our virtual textbook and its applications. When the unit allows, I use activities that requires the resource of GeoGebra and/or Excel. I also try to confront students with videos and webpages that can be useful for them to do some extra works. We use the institutional email and OneNote, OneDrive to share material we do during the class to provide them tools to develop their autonomy.

I note students prefer Statistics, Arithmetic and Geometric constructions. Algebra is always the higher issue. Students like activities associate to fast answers and not the ones that are associate to work, perseverance and dedication. Most of the times, they just want to get the result and don´t worry about the procedure.

I’m use to work in pair with my colleague in my class and we can do an individual approach (when the class allows). In this situation, the students get more excited with their labor, dedicate, and try to do their best. This year we are doing a new strategy, the class is divided in 2 groups and each teacher gets out the class with one group and the other stays with the other part of the group. Less students, better approach, more individual explanation and self-motivation. I believe it is a step head to individual success of each student and in the end for the entire classroom.

I like,if I can, personalise my lessons for my students, but it's not always possible. My students are really heterogeneous: you can have, in the same group of children, very frail ones and very smart ones. If you want “to fly” with the smart ones, you risk to loose the frail ones, and, on the contrary, walking at the same velocity of the frail ones, the stronger ones get bored. It's not so easy, mostly because I haven't lots of tools (in the video all the students use a tablet, or a notebook, there are very little classes.... sometimes you feel, watching those videos, as you're watching something setted in Wonderland).

The old teacher used to ask them high abstraction performances, too high I think. The consequence is that they think that math should be difficult if well done, they think that manipulation of objects is for children. So I propose them active lessons based on some computer activities, such as geogebra for math, and science simulations: they recognise them as valuable activities even if they're not so abstract as the ones they were used to do.

I teach maths in a grammar school. My students are between 15 and 19 years old. Classes in our school are pretty big, 36-38 students per class and students came with different knowledge and different skill levels. So before introducing almost every new topic, I divide them into groups and give them some real problems to solve in order to avoid questions such as "Why do we learn this?" and to see how well they can cope with translating those problems into math language. I usually post those problems on Edmodo platform, or at my web site, or on GeoGebraTube. They can get any help they need, through the Edmodo platform. Then, we discuss their solutions at our introducing class to the certain topic. They talk about their solutions as well as about problems they faced with during the process. Afterwords, we start with that topic, set up our learning objectives for the topic etc.

I would like to explore these games and use them from time to time. However, there is only one computer in the classroom so we have to use other devices. We have some tablets in our school, so students could work in pairs (there are usually around 20-25 students in one class).
My students come from similar social groups, but as far as ability is concerned, there are differences. The ones in the upper group like challenges, while the ones in the intermediate group like to have algorithms they can learn and get a good mark - they are afraid of making mistakes and they do not trust themselves that they can discover something for themselves. But all kids enjoy when they experience some success in the classroom.

Since i tutor, the character of my teaching is oriented towards diversification and has to be tailored to the needs of my students. Thus personalize my teaching is a must!

This is what i do:

First i provide the theoretical background (which in my view can not be personalized) so as to introduce the students to what is about to follow and to show the formulas i will implement. After that the diversification of my teaching begins since i try to give as much examples/sample exercises i can so as to cover the needs of all level students. Queries of all students are addressed and i try to answer in a way so as to emphasize always in what is of most importance having in mind that less capable students need to address exercises to a decent level. In that way i try to ensure a minimum level of understanding for all the class. The next part of my diversification is that i give different homework to different level students, meaning that to the more capable students i provide exercises of higher difficulty as mandatory, whereas to the others i set the same exercises as optional.

Not every day class we can play: sometimes we don't have the computer room free, sometimes the subjet is not good for play. My class students came from the city center: they all have Internet access, they have high golds.

My students have different backgrounds and, in general, poor resources. Many of them don't have a pc or an internet connection. At school I use my PC with a 24" monitor to show them videos, to play together with coding activities, to introduce new games, shared in the school blog (but very few children look at them and spend time at home to learn playing). My idea to personalizing lessons pass through the cooperative learning during group work, or pair work, where children can find a role in the learning process. Sometimes I give them different activities, to review weak concepts or to increase their knowledge (recovery-building up groups). The games to be solved are perfect to involve everybody, in spite of the different levels. Anyway, in this 2.0 generation (but my class is still living quite in the past) i think it could be better not abandon the use of the fingers on the paper, or on the pencils. Summarizing...the unplugged activities are definitely my favourite, using ICT (a great resource) when useful.

I don’t understand at all the meaning of “the information [..] provided by the computer games”, but now I try to ask questions that would be interesting to “personalize” learning: What kind of lesson do you prefer? – Who can help you to improve? What does your family think about Maths? – When does it happen that you experience difficulties? – Why don’t you ask for more attention/explication from your teacher? – Where you find more/some fun studying Maths? (Drawing geometric forms? Doing mathematical operations? Representing problems by acting or drawing? Playing on PC mathematical games?) – What subject do you prefer at school? Why? – Have you done some practical experiences in which you apply/use mathematical knowledges?
And now, concerning the last question “What always/never works?”: It does never work when you pretend that they organize themselves to apply what they study to a real/concrete situation. You must help them to “see or touch” what seems only to be abstract! – It does work when they are all together engaged (get involved) to discover a solution for practical examples/cases. You must repeat and repeat some concepts/problems, illustrating / “living” relations and strategies of solution with their engagement – as it would be a competition.

Personalising is necessary…always, especially in my class, where we have 6 special needs students out of 23, so a very high percentage.

In my teaching reality personalising isn’t much practised but it should be, I mean all teachers teaching math in a certain grade plan together and choose the same activities for all the class; these activities are reformulate at a lower level for the special needs students. This is the only “personalising” level usually is done; from the point of view of the learning goals rather than in terms of motivation or interests. But I’m trying to push the process further (and sometimes my collegues look at me as an alien…never mind!

“ What kind of activities do your students like? What communities do they come from? What are topics they are interested in?”

In my class we have many foreign students from Albania, Romania, Philippines…and they’re willing to talk about their culture and their origins, their habits and traditions. We live in a little town with a river , surrounded by mountains with lots of sports groups and volunteer associations of actors and musicians, so our children stay a lot outside, along the river, riding bikes and practicing sports, playing football in the parks, playing hide and seek in the squares, going to craft labs and cinemas in the week ends, birthday parties…this is their life!

So I usually try to insert in the lesson their experiences and they are quiet creative and responsive

“ What always works, what never works with them?” Group work and oral work is their best learning environment, they find hard to work individually (they always tend to compare and ask each others about their works) and sitting too long, so we alternate desk-activities and TPR activities or outside or laboratory lessons. They always want to express their opinion or give suggestions or criticise or changing something (an exercise, a rule, a homework…)They need a lot using their hands so building, drawing, assembling, manipulating real aids…seem to be a must for their comprehension and for concentrating in what they’re thinking about

“ And how do you take all these aspects into account in your lesson planning?”

With this class my “password” is flexibility: I plan something but quite often it becomes something different, even better, but different because of their requests and suggestions. So I know the topic I know the learning goal, I’ve in my mind two or three possible activities and this part is the most changeable one because they often set their own activities, maybe just a little changing but different from what I had asked for…! So my effort is to make their changes and proposal valuable for their learning process and connect them to the curriculum, it’s a sort of upside-down planning process, not easy for me but very stimulating
